Flourishes - April, 2006

Kaye’s Korner

Congratulations to everyone as the guild celebrates its  30th Anniversary!  Our cover this month was done by Helen Rasplicka, our only charter member still active in the guild!.  Helen, a past president, has been a guiding force throughout the years.  We appreciate her loyalty and her friendliness to new members.  Her watercolor rose on the cover has turned into our logo of sorts for the celebration.  Thanks Helen!

We are eager to hang our exhibit at Los Patios on March 29 for the opening on Sunday, April 2.  We appreciate Jill Adams, B.J. Grant and Helen who have chaired the Anniversary Committee.  Los Patios, in its beautiful setting, is a wonderful place to come for lunch with our friends and show off our guild's work!  The show will hang for two months.

The nominating committee has selected the executive board slate for the coming year.  They were introduced at the March meeting.  The complete listing is in this newsletter.  The election will be in May with the new board introduced at the June Pot Luck.  Many thanks to all those who serve in this volunteer capacity to guide the guild.  These volunteers are the strength of these last 30 years.

At our April general meeting we will remember these last 30 years.  The beautiful scrapbooks, past presidents’ books, members’ work, guild Calendars, and directories will be available throughout the room to peruse and enjoy.  Bill Waddington, past president, will emcee the evening and will call on members to share special things they remember.  Lenora Jordan and Betty Lou Jordan are making special designations denoting the number of years each person has been in the guild.  Do not miss this meeting.  There will be wonderful door prizes for just about everyone who attends!   I heard by the grapevine we are having homemade cakes!

Do not overlook the beautiful envelope holding this newsletter!  Between the hand lettering, gocco-ing, cutting, pasting, stuffing and hand placed postage stamp .......over 25 members were involved in the task.  The newsletter is all in color and ably edited by Leslie Winakur, assisted by B.J. Grant.  This is a continuous job of 10 months each year and we are always so proud of the publication.  Thank you, thank you!

Our Saturday Special which was led by Bill Bristow guiding us through the McNay Art Museum will long be remembered as a special day.  I am still thinking about all the wonderful things Bill pointed out in the permanent collection, and I will never look at the paintings in the same way again.  What a treat to tour Bill and Willanna's home and their studio.  The day will long be in my mind's memory book.  Their kindness and graciousness is so appreciated.

On the third Thursday, April 20, our mini workshop will be back to the basics with Joan Schmitz teaching us the Rotunda alphabet. Joan has taught lettering for over 25 years and she is such a good teacher; we can all learn so much from her on how to improve our letters.

I will be looking forward to seeing you all at the opening of our Spring Show on Sunday, April 2, from 4-6 at Los Patios and our general meeting on April 6 at Christ Episcopal Church in the Family Life Center.

Cheers!

Kaye

April Activities

Early Bird
HAPPY 30th ANNIVERSARY

Thursday, April 6, 2006, 6:30-9 PM

In celebration of the 30th Anniversary of the San Antonio Calligraphers’ Guild, we will enjoy a display of our history. The scrap books will be there - yes, all of them - for us to browse at our leisure. The official guild banner, designed by Bill Bristow and Bonnie Houser, will be on display for all to enjoy. And the scroll which was created by Sally Gooze and which lists all past Paul Freeman Award winners will also be on display.

For the program, Bill Waddington - our own personal combination of Jay Leno and David Letterman all rolled into one - will be Master of Ceremonies as we reminisce about the good old days. Be sure to give him your stories if you haven't already done so.

At a time when many guilds are struggling, we are quite fortunate to be so strong and energetic in our 30th year. So come join the celebration and be a part of our guild’s ongoing history.

Rotunda is the style of writing that many of the large vellum song sheets were written in around the 1400’s. It was also used to write tiny prayer books.

If you have a 3.5 mm marker, please bring it along for class. Joan has plenty of extras if you don’t have one. Lined paper and handouts will be furnished.

Please come and enjoy!

SPRING IS ON THE WAY…

By now hopefully you have your ideas for the work you will contribute to the Spring Exhibit. The opening will take place on Sunday, April 2, 2006 at Los Patios, from 4—6 PM. It will be part of our 30th Anniversary Celebration and we’re hoping for a large number of members to participate. Helen Rasplicka has completed the artwork for an advertising poster and for the invitations. Artwork must be turned in by 12 noon on Wednesday, March 29, 2006. Entry fee for artwork in the exhibit is $10 for the 1st piece, $5 for the 2nd (and 3rd if there is room for a 3rd). Please keep in mind that we need large pieces. Entry forms are enclosed with this newsletter.

TIME FOR A ROAD TRIP

The Tyler Museum of Art in Tyler, TX, will host the exhibit entitled Illuminating the Word: The Saint John’s Bible, from June 9 to September 3, 2006. This is the Donald Jackson bible which has been commissioned by Saint John’s University and Abbey in Minnesota. It is the first handwritten, illuminated bible of the modern era, created using a combination of medieval and modern techniques. Tyler is located on IH20, east of Dallas, about halfway between Dallas and Shreveport. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10-5, and Sunday 1-5. The museum’s phone number is 903-595-1055.

THANK YOU to the March Hospitality team. We all enjoyed the delicious foods supplied by Joan Cornell, Marilyn McLean, Anita Hyman, Beverly Carter, Mary B. Bowman, and Jill Adams.

A message from Bill Waddington…

HELLO, FOLKS! IT’S TIME FOR REMINISCENCES-ES-ES! If you are short on those “remi” things, your favorite memories will suffice. Our April meeting celebrates the Guild’s 30th Anniversary, and we need members to share some of those memories. We will be tracking the Guild’s 30-year history with memories that members are willing to share, i.e., what inspired various members to join the guild, favorite experiences as a member, recalling those teachers that brought a “WOW” to you lips and those experiences that were especially funny in your journey to become “great calligraphers.”

In order that we may hear from as many as possible, try to express those memories in a 3 minute presentation. YES! You will be requested to identify yourself, tell us the year you joined, and to share the memory/memories.

Please call Bill to add your name to the list, and be a part of the 30th Anniversary Celebration and REMINISCE for all! You may reach Bill at 210-655-1811. Thank you for contributing to the fun.

~books~wanted~books~wanted~books

The New Orleans Public Library is asking for any and all hardcover and paperback books for people of all ages in an effort to restock the shelves after Katrina.  The staff will assess which titles will be designated for its collections.  The rest will be distributed to destitute families or sold for library fundraising.  Please send your books to:

Rica A. Trigs, Public Relations
  New Orleans Public Library
  219 Loyola Avenue
  New Orleans, LA 70112

If you tell the post office that they are for the library in New Orleans, they will give you the library rate which is slightly less than the book rate.

Reminder

In preparing for our Annual Spring Show which will open April 2, 2006, at Los Patios, we are collecting our 26 individual framed letters  for hanging in the exhibit.

If you have one and have not yet turned it in, please be sure to get it to either Maggie Gillikin or Leslie Winakur BEFORE the exhibit opening on April 2, 2006. Thank you.
