FLOURISHES - December 2006

Cover Artist:  Maggie Gillikin

Dear Fellow Scribes,

As 2007 rapidly approaches, the holidays are here. I’m looking forward to our annual Holiday Potluck December 7th. The guild is providing the meat. Join us and bring an appetizer, salad, side dish, or dessert. The variety is always wonderful and the food is just the beginning of an evening full of conversation, sharing gifts with the Battered Women’s Shelter, a fun card or bookmark exchange, and enjoying each others company.

Remember, along with your dish, to bring toiletries, toys, whatever you’d like for the Women’s Shelter and a card or bookmark to exchange with a guild member. Extra cards and bookmarks are always welcome at the Shelter. Lynn Rothe will graciously collect the items that are donated at the potluck and take everything to the shelter. This is a time of year when everyone, young and old, wants to be able to have a gift for their loved ones, and our donations allow the children and women who are at the shelter to have something to give. Please don’t wrap the gifts. The mothers and children are invited to look over all of the choices and make their own selections.

November was a quiet month for the guild. With no mini workshop and no board meeting, some of us found unfamiliar free Thursday evenings (smiling!) At the general meeting we were invited to laugh and to doodle. Thanks to Cindy Haller who lives in Houston who presented the program. Everyone was begging, borrowing, and sharing pens of all kinds to doodle and just make marks. I heard several comments about how relaxing the evening it was. Cindy’s handout got us started and then the card she handed out to have us work on was wonderful. Thank you Cindy! (And thanks to Dolores Schultz as well who provided lots of support!) I didn’t see too many of the cards as people worked on them (I was busy doodling on my own!), but if you did finish your card, or were inspired to create a different one, please bring them to the Share Table. The evening got off to a wonderful start as Maggie Gillikin shared design tips with us. Thanks Maggie!

We also had a wonderful Saturday Special early in the month. Lynn Rothe shared the secrets of creating an altered board book in the shape of an angel. The angel books were fast taking shape as we left for home that Saturday afternoon. I hope to see some of them on the Share Table at the potluck. It was quite intriguing to see the variety of color combinations and different approaches to this structure. Lynn generously shared not only her knowledge but her paints, glues, paper and the books themselves. Thank you Lynn!

December promises to be exciting. If you have not had a chance to sign up for Leslie’s and Maggie’s holiday book class, it will be the first weekend in December. Call Maggie or Leslie to see if there are any openings and for details.

My wish for one and all this season is Peace. Sometimes life is overwhelming, especially in December. In the midst of the planning, shopping, mailing, partying, and feasting, I’m hoping you find at least a few moments of peace.

December Activities

Early Bird

You are invited to partake in the

SACG Annual Holiday
Pot Luck Dinner

Thursday, December 7, 2006
6:30 - 9 pm

We will gather in our usual meeting room.
Please bring a dish to share. The guild will furnish the meat.

We will also enjoy our annual card/bookmark exchange.
Please bring one item for yourself, and one for your guest.

Please also remember to bring your donations for the
Battered Women’s and Children’s Shelter.

We extend a hearty thank you to the November Hospitality team of Lynn Rothe, Lenora Jordan, Nancy Meier, Pam Thomas, and Jo Drake.

Please remember that we are all on the Hospitality crew for our Annual December Pot Luck Dinner! Beverly Carter and Camille Storment have volunteered to make table decorations and could use some assistance with the setup that evening, so please contact them if you would like to lend a hand. As in the past, the Guild will provide the meat that evening.

Also, don’t forget to make a card or bookmark for our exchange at the Pot Luck. Bring only one card unless you are bringing a guest or spouse, in which case you are welcome to bring an extra.

The Battered Women’s Shelter is always in need of toiletries, and this time of year there is a need for gift items for the children as well as the adult women. So please try to remember them when you do your shopping and bring your donations (not wrapped) to the December meeting.

Shawn Behrens is our Library Coordinator this year. There apparently are several books which are unaccounted for at present, along with a check-out list for Box Number 4. If you are holding any library items, please be certain to check through your things and let Shawn know if you have any of the missing books, videos, or lists. Keep in mind that the Guild owns an extensive library full of many wonderful out-of-print and unique books and videos. Be sure to take advantage of our collection. The latest addition to our Library is Kit Nelson’s slide collection, which contains photos of the many workshops she attended.

Our next Major Workshop will take place February 3-4, 2007, when Maggie Gillikin and Leslie Winakur will present a 2 day class on Color and Design. The class will be at Discovery School, from 9-5 both days. It will provide comprehensive instruction on the use of color in general, and in calligraphic art in particular. It will also discuss basic elements of design and layout with special reference to calligraphic art. This will be a great class in which to begin preparation of a piece for the Spring Exhibit. Jill Adams is now accepting checks for this class. The class fee is $80 per student, and this includes your $20 supply fee. You may mail your check to Jill, or contact her if you have any questions.
Thank you to Anita Hyman, Sally Theus, Bill Waddington, Nancy Meier and friends, and Joan Schmitz for the wonderful Door Prize donations that were awarded to Jill Adams, Shawn Behrens, Jan Gorman, Nancy Meier, and Leslie Winakur at the November meeting. Beverly Carter, Betty Lou Jordan, Leonora Martin, and Lucy Dalkowitz created some very pretty pencils covered in their hand-marbled papers and donated them as well.

The guild extends sincere sympathy to Helen Rasplicka on the death of her younger brother in Nebraska during October.  Helen is the only active charter member of the Guild.  Our thoughts and prayers are with Helen and her family.

There was a lot of interest in the Gocco following Kaye Yarbrough’s wonderful and informative mini-workshop in October. Supplies for the printer may be ordered from Thinkink.com. There is a Gocco available for rental from the Guild through the library.  At the present time it is at Kaye Yarbrough's home for check out.  It has 10 screens and 10 sets of bulbs and various inks and all supplies needed to print.  Instructions for check out are in the directory.  Also BJ Grant and Bill Waddington have Goccos for sale.  Call them if you would like to purchase their used ones.  It is a good time of the year to think of making cards, napkins, Valentines etc.

Envelope Exchange

We are happy to report that twenty-seven people have signed up for the envelope exchange.

Sign ups will be taken at the December Pot Luck.  In January, at the meeting, you will be given your rotation for January, February, March, April and May.  The envelopes will be displayed at the potluck in June.  The list will be divided up into groups of 4.  Each month you will decorate and mail 4 envelopes and you will receive 4 envelopes.  As far as possible each month you will have different names in your group.

This will be  a fun spring activity for the guild.  An envelope is a small, doable little project.  You may add a card inside if you wish.    Out of town members are encouraged to participate;   just be sure and get your name to Kaye Yarbrough by December 10 so you can be added to the list.

Saturday special

Orizomegami and fantasy flowers

With Pauline sager

Saturday, January 13, 2007

10 am to 4 pm, in the usual meeting room

The day will commence with doing Orizomegami, the Japanese art of a simple fold-and-dye technique, from which interesting kaleidoscopic designs emerge when the paper is unfolded. The papers can be used to make greeting cards, book covers and end sheets, and collage elements.  After lunch you will be introduced to Pavasa’s Fantasy Flowers.

One day, about 20 years ago, shortly after the Staedtler Mars Graphic 3000 markers were introduced, Pauline decided to test these flexible tip markers on some manipulation techniques she had learned in Sumi-e painting classes. The blossom and bamboo leaves were a natural, as were a few other motifs she knew. Curious about how many flowers could possibly be duplicated with these markers, and in as few strokes as possible, she settled down for the weekend with books she had on wildflowers and garden flowers to study and practice their anatomy. From the designs that developed, she chose those which would be the easiest to quickly decorate a note card or envelope without having to resort to mixing paints. Thus was born what she named Fantasy Flowers, because they are more of a stylized version of flowers. The florae emerge from the use of certain shapes and colors, and through imagination or illusion. These markers are now acid free and can also be used for broadsides and scrapbooking.

Supply List:

▪ Sketch book or quality bond paper
▪ .01 waterproof marker ( Micron Pigma, et al)
▪ Small watercolor brush
▪ Staedtler Mars Graphic 3000 Markers: At least one each from the Magenta (or Lavender), Green, and Blue        families, and a Yellow. (See note)
▪ Pen or pencil for taking notes

▪ X-acto knife and cutting mat
▪ Paper Towels, Some newspaper
▪ 1-2 small shallow bowls, like a ramekin ( or tuna or cat food cans will suffice)

▪ Glue stick

▪ Supply Fee:  $4.
The dyes, paper, and surgical latex gloves for Orizomegami are furnished as part of your supply fee, but should you have the food coloring in the small dropper bottles, bring these. Please notify Pauline should you need gloves larger than medium.

NOTE:  Bring all that you have, even if they appear to have dried up.  Pauline will show you how to rejuvenate them.  These markers have around 100 hues.  It’s best to use a mid range - not too light or too dark.  Unfortunately, individual colors are no longer available locally and have to be mail-ordered.  Those needing to order should contact Pauline before December 16.  The cost for 3 markers (M,G,B) is $11.50 and for  4 markers  (M,G,B,Y) is $15.00.
