Dear Friends,

What a pleasure it was to view Maggie Gillikin's beautiful work and hear about her creative life.  Her first lettering class was with Helen Rasplicka and her next one was with Joan Schmitz.  She certainly had a wonderful beginning!  Her joy of working with children through her puppet company, of making books and her water color painting have given her a very fulfilling life.  Thank you for sharing all of this with us, Maggie! And it was nice to have so many members come from Austin to hear Maggie's program.  They are always so welcome!
 
Congratulations to our new slate of officers elected at the May meeting.  They will be led by President Pam Thomas and they have many exciting things planned for the coming year.
 
The Secret Pal Committee has once again come up with an original and clever method of notifying us of our Secret Pal.  What fun it will be in September when all is revealed and we get to feast on the art work that was sent during the summer!  The Secret Pal Art Expo is a highlight of the year and what a great way to begin the year.
 
Our annual Pot Luck Dinner in June is always a favorite time of the year to gather and enjoy some good food and fun.  I think I will bring a freezer of ice cream.  That gives me an excuse to make it!

The Spring Calligraphy Show at Los Patios has been so successful and opened many eyes to beautiful writing.  I spoke with the owner Mr. McClung today and he said they have had many compliments on the show.
 
I hope you will all have a wonderful summer.  I plan to do some lettering every day.........even 
if it is only an envelope .............I consider an envelope a small canvas..........a small project for fun.
 
It has been a pleasure to serve as your president for the last 2 years.  My thanks to everyone who serves as an officer, committee chairman, committee member or an active member.  This guild is composed of a world of people who love letters, books and other art forms.  What a wonderful world!

Thank you to the May Hospitality Committee for our delicious refreshments.  Lenora Jordan, Lynn Rothe, Sylvia Stanley, Pam Thomas, and Kaye Yarbrough provided us with some wonderful munchies.   

Please remember that in June we will enjoy our Annual Pot Luck Dinner and Installation of Officers.  This is a real pot luck meal, so bring whatever you’re in the mood for and share it with your friends.  The Guild will provide the meat for the dinner and we will bring everything else.   

Congratulations to this year’s Paul Freeman Award Winners:

Beverly Carter, Nancy Meier, Pam Thomas, and Karen Veni have been recognized by their fellow Guild members for outstanding service to the Guild over the past year.  All the nominees received a Jacob’s Ladder structure to house their nomination certificates, and the winners will have an entire year to feast their eyes on the lovely Paul Freeman and Dennis Brown works owned by the Guild.  We extend a special thank you to Eleanor Russell for her very generous donation of a framed work by Paul Freeman that has been in her personal collection for some time.   

MEMBERSHIP DUES are due!  If you have not yet paid your dues, please be sure to do so.  Your information form must be turned in by the June Pot Luck in order for you to be listed in the new Directory, which will be created over the summer.

Thank you so much to all those who donated Door Prizes for the Anniversary celebration.  We had enough left over to allow Sylvia Stanley to distribute them to all of those who were not present in April and to all of our guests who were at the May meeting.

Our Spring Exhibit has been hanging for nearly two months already. Time really does fly when we're having fun!  So, it’s time to make plans to take down the exhibit.  You must go get your piece(s) from Los Patios on Wednesday, May 31 at 9 AM.   This is very important, since another show will be going up right after ours comes down, and the restaurant must continue to function on that day.  If you are unable to be there, be sure to ask a friend to pick up your artwork for you. 

 LIBRARY INVENTORY

All books must be accounted for by the June Pot Luck.  If you are responsible for a Library box, please let Maggie Gillikin know if you will be keeping your box over the summer.  If you would like to keep a book over the summer, please be sure to tell the keeper of your box, so that a complete and accurate inventory can be accomplished.

 Everyone was enthralled by Maggie Gillikin’s artwork and puppetry during her retrospective in May.

Sampler Book: Surface Design on Polymer Clay
Discovery School; Sunday, June 25, 2006, 9 – 5 p.m.

You’ll learn more techniques than you’ll be able to practice in this workshop. The goal is to design pages that segue or echo through the perfect-for-clay binding. It will open your eyes to the possibilities for pages. The techniques are also perfect for jewelry or dolls.

Alumni? Did you take the workshop last year? Repeat it for $25, sans the goodie bag that you have from last year. Bring whatever you can gather from it.

Retro Cane: Cane Building through Extrusion

Learn to build a stack to extrude through clay guns to build a cane. Fluid dynamics make great patterns for cane building. You’ll love this cane for jewelry, books and dolls.

Maggie Gillikin and Leslie Winakur

A BOOK IN A BOX
September 9-10, 2006, 9 Am –5 PM, at Discovery School
Class fee: $60. plus $10 supply fee.

We will create a hard bound book in a lined slipcase. We will spend Saturday morning sewing and casing in the book, which will have a quarter cloth binding. We will then create a working model for the slipcase after lunch on Saturday. The model will allow the student to create a slipcase for any book in the future, with ease. On Sunday, we will create the slipcase itself for the book we made on Saturday. If time permits, we will also fashion a decorated letter embellished with 24 karat gold for the title page of the book.

12” metal ruler
Bone folder
Cutting mat
Waste paper (plain newsprint) for gluing
Decorative paper, 20” x 25” minimum size (NOT wrapping paper, not heavy weight)

We will supply: glue, text blocks torn and punched, muslin super, thread, Japanese silk book cloth, needles and threads, book board, glue brushes, handouts. Metal triangle and aluminum jigs will be available for sale.
