FLOURISHES - November 2006

Cover Artist:

What a wonderful October meeting we had! Leslie Winakur used her background and experience and provided a wonderful look at the history of illuminated letters from 400 to the present. She graciously shared examples from her library and presented an excellent slide show for us. Thank you, Leslie, for the program as well as the early bird scriptorium. Thanks to Nancy Meier who assisted Leslie.

I am looking forward to seeing lots of illuminated letters on our share table in November. I know the workshop with Ken Harris was fantastic. Thanks again to the workshop committee of Jill Adams, Joan Schmitz, and Leslie Winakur for hosting Ken and for providing yet another learning opportunity for guild members.

During the October meeting, Bonnie Houser invited members to participate in the guild’s mentoring program. If you didn’t have a chance to sign up either as a mentor or a mentoree, it’s not too late. Contact Bonnie for an application form. Her contact information is in the guild’s directory. Members old and new can participate.

Speaking of new members, Angie Chaos-Peters has been working to put together new member packets. If you have handmade items that could be part of these welcoming packets, please give them to Angie. Thank you, Angie, for coordinating this project. And new members, be on the look out for your packets. They are worth the wait, I promise.

Thank you as well to Maggie Gillikin and Leslie Winakur whose mini on painting and lettering on glass was a fantastic hit. They showed us yet another way to gild with gold, both fake and real, as well as inspired us with their demos and samples. Lynn Rothe was able to find the engraving tool that we used to etch on the glass at Michaels. If you haven’t signed up for the minis, see Nancy Meier and get your name on the lists. She has the sign up sheets near the name tags at our general meetings. These minis are a bargain at $5 and Nancy has lined up some wonderful ones for us.

At the October meeting, Lynn Rothe announced that she will be collecting for the battered women’s shelter. She has graciously volunteered to once again take the items to the shelter and has also volunteered to collect any donations that are brought to the November meeting and store them until the December meeting. Lynn has a list of items that the shelter can use during the holidays. Please bring unwrapped gifts and needed items to either the November or December meetings. Don’t forget, the women and kids love handmade cards, so as you are working on your holiday cards, make a few extra for them.

November and chilly temperatures is here. I am so thankful for this wonderful, giving group of calligraphers and friends. I’m so glad I found SACG six years ago. I wish each of you might also find that spirit of friendship and creativity. Thanks for being members of the San Antonio Calligraphy Guild.

 Design

Cindy Haller

 Thursday, November 2, 2006, 7-9 PM

The November 2 program, Design, will be presented by Cindy Haller.  Cindy lives in Seabrook, TX, and is a graphic designer with 30 years  experience.  She specializes in calligraphy, custom lettering, bookbinding, book arts, paper and fiber arts. The program will be hands on, where you can try some of the numerous ideas and helpful hints she will give for your layout and design when doing a calligraphic piece of art.

Supply list:

·          Black Pigma Micron Markers, .005 and .01

·          Either .05 or .08 pencil and eraser

Everything else will be provided

Thank you to Kerri Hillyer, Sylvia Enriquez, and Dolores Schultz for our October refreshments. You set a lovely table. Please remember that you can still sign up to take your turn at Hospitality by contacting Mary Bumstead or Carol Keith. Carol has just been to Colorado for her 50th high school reunion. You go, girl!

The new Membership Directory is being mailed to those who have not yet picked it up. We still have extra Directories available for sale at $2 per large Directory, and $1 per mini. If you have any corrections or additions to the Directory, please contact our Membership Chair, Angie Chaos-Peters.

If you are a new member who would like a Mentor or you are a veteran member who would like to be a mentor, please contact Bonnie Houser and she will be sure to connect you with each other. The mentoring program is designed to help newer members get acquainted with the ins and outs of the world of calligraphy. Your mentor will give you a helping hand.

The Ken Harris medieval gilding and painting workshop was a success. It was so interesting to see how the monks made gesso and then to actually lay our own gold on that gesso base. Thank you to all who participated. If you have a completed letter and/or painting, please be sure to bring it to the share table.
Kaye Yarbrough has offered to organize an Envelope Exchange if there is sufficient interest. An envelope is a comfortably small broadside, non-intimidating, and yet an excellent opportunity to be creative. Each participant would be asked to design no more than 4 envelopes per month, from January through May, 2007. The idea is to letter and decorate and mail the envelope, not necessarily to fill it, so if you like, you may enclose a note or card, but the enclosure is optional. By the end of May, you will have 20 beautiful envelopes and we will have a display of them at the Pot Luck Dinner. Contact Kaye if you would like to take part. All members are welcome in this activity, including our out of town members! Kaye will have a sign up sheet and the specific instructions at the November and December meetings, and she will finalize the list of participants in time for the January meeting.

Pauline Sager and Mary B. Bowman have recently been in touch with Virginia Harrison, who has been a member of our guild for 21 years. Virginia is still doing calligraphy for the public, and would love to hear from her friends in the guild. She has moved in with her daughter, and her new address and phone are on the back page.

Two different groups are requesting calligraphy teachers. One is OASIS in the Ingram Park Mall area. Call Pauline Sager for details. The other is Scrapbook 911, one of our Directory advertisers, located near Blanco and 1604. They would like someone to come to their shop and teach. Please contact them directly.

A reminder: Beverly Carter maintains the newsletter library and has a large collection of newsletters from other guilds. These contain lots of information that our members might find useful.

Congratulations to our October Door Prize Winners: Bill Waddington, Pam Thomas, Joan Schmitz, Edith Asher, and Loni Carlson. Prizes included notecards Gocco-printed by the guild and items donated by friends of Nancy Meier. Sylvia Stanley is always grateful for any door prize donations you may have.

It is with regret that we announce the sudden death of Peggy Grace Vaughter in Austin. Peggy led a very full life, brought joy to many, and was a long time member of the Austin guild, Capital City Scribes. Our sincere sympathy to her husband Phil Vaughter and all of her family.
Cards may be sent to 1103 Newport Avenue, Austin, TX, 78753.
