FLOURISHES - November 2006
What a wonderful October meeting we had! Leslie Winakur used her
background and experience and provided a wonderful look at the
history of illuminated letters from 400 to the present. She
graciously shared examples from her library and presented an
excellent slide show for us. Thank you, Leslie, for the program
as well as the early bird scriptorium. Thanks to Nancy Meier who
assisted Leslie.
I am looking forward to seeing lots of illuminated letters on
our share table in November. I know the workshop with Ken Harris
was fantastic. Thanks again to the workshop committee of Jill
Adams, Joan Schmitz, and Leslie Winakur for hosting Ken and for
providing yet another learning opportunity for guild members.
During the October meeting, Bonnie Houser invited members to
participate in the guild’s mentoring program. If you didn’t have
a chance to sign up either as a mentor or a mentoree, it’s not
too late. Contact Bonnie for an application form. Her contact
information is in the guild’s directory. Members old and new can
participate.
Speaking of new members, Angie Chaos-Peters has been working to
put together new member packets. If you have handmade items that
could be part of these welcoming packets, please give them to
Angie. Thank you, Angie, for coordinating this project. And new
members, be on the look out for your packets. They are worth the
wait, I promise.
Thank you as well to Maggie Gillikin and Leslie Winakur whose
mini on painting and lettering on glass was a fantastic hit.
They showed us yet another way to gild with gold, both fake and
real, as well as inspired us with their demos and samples. Lynn
Rothe was able to find the engraving tool that we used to etch
on the glass at Michaels. If you haven’t signed up for the
minis, see Nancy Meier and get your name on the lists. She has
the sign up sheets near the name tags at our general meetings.
These minis are a bargain at $5 and Nancy has lined up some
wonderful ones for us.
At the October meeting, Lynn Rothe announced that she will be
collecting for the battered women’s shelter. She has graciously
volunteered to once again take the items to the shelter and has
also volunteered to collect any donations that are brought to
the November meeting and store them until the December meeting.
Lynn has a list of items that the shelter can use during the
holidays. Please bring unwrapped gifts and needed items to
either the November or December meetings. Don’t forget, the
women and kids love handmade cards, so as you are working on
your holiday cards, make a few extra for them.
November and chilly temperatures is here. I am so thankful for
this wonderful, giving group of calligraphers and friends. I’m
so glad I found SACG six years ago. I wish each of you might
also find that spirit of friendship and creativity. Thanks for
being members of the San Antonio Calligraphy Guild.
