Dear Fellow Artists,

What a wonderful April we have had! No April Fools in SACG! Our anniversary show opening was a resounding success. A huge thanks to our exhibit committee Jill Adams, BJ Grant, and Helen Rasplicka for all of their planning and coordination. Also thanks to the exhibit hanging chair, Maggie Gillikin. Each piece is shown off to its fullest. Special thanks to Keith Cheshire for his help with the hanging and to Beverly Carter, Camille Storment and Bill Waddington who were there for the turn in and along with the committee, worked all day. Another thanks to Sally and Dan Theus who suggested Los Patios to us last year. The guild’s banner is so striking as you enter the room. Thanks to Bill Bristow who designed it and to Bonnie Houser who did the lettering. And finally, thanks to all the artists of the 53 pieces! The show couldn’t have happened without each of you. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

for sharing this bit of yourself as you shared your journey, Dolores. We are so blessed to have you and
Charlie in our area now.

Thanks to Bill Bristow for the wonderful mini on Kalligrams. Bill’s minis and workshops are always fun and educational. I know this one will be no different. Thanks for sharing.

With such a fabulous April now over, May promises to be just as wonderful. We are so lucky to have
Peter Thornton here as our program presenter and then workshop facilitator. Thanks to the major
workshop committee for all their work getting the details handled. I know we are in for a fabulous time.

Then of course, our May mini with Karen Veni will be another evening not to be missed. Hopefully she’ll also have some pics of their new house in New Mexico. I’m very thankful Karen’s still willing to travel back and forth to be a vital member of our guild.

Have a wonderfully art-filled May, and remember to get all of your envelopes in the mail so that we can have them on display in June. This has been a wonderful swap and I want to thank Kaye for organizing it.

Peter Thornton
Show and Sale and Special Presentation

Peter Thornton has been a full time professional calligrapher since 1969. He has taught throughout the US, for a large number of guilds and for many International Conferences. He has also taught in Canada, Japan, Hong Kong, South Africa, and Europe over the past 30 years, and has recently moved to the US from England. Peter is a fellow of the Calligraphy and Lettering Arts Society, which is based in London and promotes the study, practice and teaching of calligraphy in all forms.

Please join us for a display and sale of Peter’s work during our Early Bird time from 6:30-7:00 PM. After the business meeting, Peter will present his internationally renowned calligraphy and music program for all to enjoy. Whether or not you will be participating in the workshops on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, you will want to be sure to take advantage of this opportunity to see the work of one of calligraphy’s greats.

Thursday, May 17, 2007, 7-9 pm, usual meeting room

When I need a quick, but way-cool card to wow a lucky recipient, I think of this structure first. We’ll monoprint paper for a unique look, then use a jig to make cutting out the pieces quick and easy. With assembly, we’ll explore adding moveable pieces for extra personality. And finally, how about adding text?

Supplies:

2 or more 8 ½ X 11” sheets of smooth white cardstock or single or double-sided Chrome Coat cardstock
Clear plastic report cover (Your child might have one of these lying around in her school supplies.)
dye stamp pad re-inkers in 3 different colors that go together
small spray bottle with water inside
a few Q-tips
soft cosmetic sponge or sea sponge, optional
bone folder
scissors
X-acto™ knife with extra blade, 12” ruler, and cutting mat
double-stick tape
eyelets, eyelet setting tool, and the right size hole punch for the eyelet or small decorative brads
a favorite small rubber stamp or two, and stamp pad
a favorite small punch or two, optional
markers, brush markers, sharpies or other pens in dark colors that go with your dye ink colors
pencil and eraser
rag or paper towels
large sheets blank newsprint
disposable gloves and apron if desired (Dye ink does stain hands and clothes.)

Often times, we go through our sometimes mundane, daily lives in a fog. Then every once in a while something catches our eye and snaps us to attention. This class will help you have more of the "Aha" moments by looking at everyday items in a new light.

We will be making a book, with several pockets and lots of embellishments, out of small shopping bags (8" x 10") with handles. This could be the perfect treasure for your secret pal, a collection of “stuff”, souvenirs from a fun trip, etc., for a friend or yourself. Fancy, frilly, earthy, colorful, funky…each one will have its own personality.
This will be a fun project and the techniques used are very much like those used for altered books. So, put your thinking cap on and start collecting.

Saturday Special fee: $20.00
Supply fee (payable to the instructor): $6.00

We will break for lunch so bring something for yourself or if you’d like to share, we can spread it all out and do a sort of “whatever” buffet routine. Also, bring something to drink.

Student Supply List:
Magazine pictures, clothing packaging, food packaging, signage, menus, programs, event ticket stubs, business cards, and any other everyday items you’d like to incorporate into your book. These items will be used to present great design opportunities.
Your favorite rubber stamps & ink pads
Colored Markers
Punches
Ribbons, threads, yarns, fibers, etc
Any embellishments you’d like to use
PVA glue, glue stick or Jewel-It Embellishing glue
Paper towels
Scissors, X-acto knife, cutting mat
Book-binding needle (if you don’t have one, there will be enough to share)

Instructor will furnish:
The bags for the books, ribbons, buttons, beads, lots of miscellaneous embellishments, elastic cord, punches to make tiny tags, tiny pockets and tiny envelopes, colored and designed papers and card stock, tags, collage box, glazes, paints and brushes, colored hot glue and guns, goody bags for each student and probably lots of other stuff I think of between now and class time!

Be sure to take in the Spring Exhibit at Los Patios if you have not already done so. The Exhibit Committee (Jill Adams, BJ Grant, and Helen Rasplicka) did a wonderful job of coordinating everything for us. The work was hung in a way that shows off each and every piece at its best, thanks to Maggie Gillikin , Keith Cheshire, Bill Waddington, and the exhibit committee members. We have a wonderful display of new work for all to see. The show will hang until the end of May.

The annual Paul Freeman Award nominations were voted on at the April meeting. The nomination certificates and the award winners will be presented at the May meeting.

The Secret Pal Committee will deliver your assignment at the May meeting, so don’t miss it! As usual, they have outdone themselves in the creativity department.

Marie, one of our fellow calligraphers in Dallas, has started a new web site called Nib Notes. She has planned it as a forum for all calligraphers and it is easy to use and interesting to read. Check it out at:

Our guild members send their best wishes to Jane Fair and Priscilla Earl after their recent hospitalizations. We hope you are on the road to a speedy recovery.

BATTERED WOMEN'S SHELTER
SUMMER DONATIONS

The women and children at the Battered Women’s Shelter are always in need of our help, and the SACG is having a summer donation drive this year. Lots of people remember these women and their children during the winter holiday season but forget about them the rest of the year. So, we are asking you to look into your hearts and please think about them as you are doing your shopping and/or spring cleaning. Items that are always needed are: deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, hairspray, lotions, shaving supplies, toothpaste & toothbrushes, soaps, combs & brushes, linens for twin beds, towels, wash cloths, slippers, shoes, flip-flops, clothes and under wear (new – not used), diapers, baby clothes, boys clothes (women bring daughters and sons with them and often people forget that the boys are there, too). Clothing suggestions are shorts, t-shirts, skirts, slacks, shirts or any cotton clothing and pajammies.

Bring your donations to the May general meeting and/or the June Pot Luck Dinner. Everything will be delivered to the shelter on June 9. If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact Lynn Rothe at 210-646-8843 or via e-mail at lrothe@satx.rr.com .
