Alpha or the beginning of lettering as we know it centers on the monumental and callasical proportions of the Roman alphabet. Around 1000 BC, the Phoenicians had a symbol of ox called "aleph." The Greeks inverted the form in 900 BC, and the alpha came unaltered into the Roman alphabet.
