December 2018 Flourishes Cover

Thoughts from the President

As the holiday season, approaches, it is a good time to reflect on the many blessings we all have. It is also a time to give generously to those who are not so fortunate. The Battered Women’s Shelter has long been our charity of choice. Twice a year, at our December and June Potluck Dinners, we all contribute to the individuals at the shelter. Next month, please be sure to remember to bring a donation to the Potluck Dinner. Among those things that are needed are $10 gift cards from Target or Walmart, items of clothing such as socks, or underwear for children, and teens, toiletries such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap and shampoo. Non- perishable food items are also welcome. Kimberly Hartzog is our liaison with the shelter and will assure that our donations are delivered. Many thanks to Kimberly for doing this important job for us.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family. See you at the potluck in December!

Karen Fridlund
President

Major Workshop - November 2018

Taking a broadside from start to finish with Leslie Winakur and Maggie Gillikin.

A broadside is a piece that is meant to be hung on a wall. Students learned that a good composition looks good, no matter if it is right side up, upside-down, or sideways! They learned tips about matting & framing as well. Students worked with a variety of materials: watercolor, gouache, acrylic ink, sumi & walnut inks.

Note from photographer: not all of these may be right-side-up. But we learned a good composition looks good from any side.

Some images from the workshop are below; to see all the images or if you would like to see these in more detail, read more here!

Battered Women's Shelter Collection

At The Guild’s annual potluck in December, we have the first of two annual collections in support of the San Antonio Battered Women’s Shelter. Our December collection supports the Reconnecting Youth Program, which makes sure the children have the clothing, supplies and support they need to return to school. In support of this program we ask for donations of $10 gift cards to GAP, Old Navy, Target, Banana Republic, WalMart, etc. These will be distributed as gifts at the annual Christmas party. These are children of battered parents who have dropped out of school due to circumstances related to their abusive home environment. Teenagers are largely underserved in most programs and our $10 gift cards go a long way. Knowing we think of them restores their hope as they reconnect to what remains of their childhood.

Any and all canned goods are appreciated for the transitioning family food bank since children will be out of school in December. The Transition Program supports the women leaving/graduating the shelter as they learn job skills and transition into the job market.

Of course, any and all household items, new undergarments of any size (adult female and children of all sizes are served-grab a variety), gently used clothing (women, children & teens), and toiletries are always needed. These women often show up with their children and nothing but the clothes they are wearing. Text or call me with any questions about items for donation.
