Thoughts From the President

What a busy General Meeting we had this month! The Paul Freeman Awards, election of our officers for the upcoming year, learning who your Secret Pal is- all capped off with a marvelous presentation by Pamela Paulsrud . Congratulations to the nominees and winners of the Paul Freeman Awards . Nominees Denise Cavanaugh, Natalie Fowler, Maggie Gillikin, Laura Herold, Beth McMahon, Suzan O’Conner, Lynn Rothe, Mary Turner, and Leslie Winikur all received handcrafted scrolls (beautifully done by Maggie and Leslie). Mary Turner, Laura Herold, Maggie Gillikin and Denise Cavanaugh all will enjoy one of the four pieces of artwork in their homes for the following year.
We are happy to welcome two new members to our board next year- Beth McMahon, Secretary and Kathy Sipes- Treasurer. Thanks to you both for volunteering to do those very important jobs. Many thanks to Carolyn Patton, who has been Treasurer for the past two years and did a wonderful job! Our finances are in great shape. I would also like to say a big “thank you” to Rosie Gonzales, who will be leaving her position as Hospitality Chair after the June potluck.
I hope to see you all at the Potluck next month. Don’t forget your items for the Battered Women’s Shelter, your artwork for the “Share Table”. Participants in the envelope exchange will also be bringing their finished decorated envelopes. Always fun! Have a wonderful summer.

General Meeting - May 2019

At this month's meeting, our speaker, Pamela Paulsrud, did a fabulous presentation. The title of her presentation was Trees Speak in Whispers. She was also the instructor for the weekend’s major workshop.

During our meeting, we also had our announcements of the Paul Freeman Award winners. Each nominee received a lovely calligrapher scroll.
Our members enjoy the share table. The framed piece is a sample of the May Mini class. It will be making “inches”; small 1” square pieces of tiny art, put together, to make a larger piece. This framed Inchie piece was done by Lynn Rothe.

Major Workshop - May 2019

Life Lines Workshop with Pamela Paulsrud
Pamela Paulsrud arrived in San Antonio in time for our General Meeting on May 2. She presented a program centered on her two trips to the Middle East to share her Tree Whispers Installation in an amazing calligraphy event there. We were treated to images of an incredible variety of calligraphic art in many languages, as well as excerpts from several interviews with calligraphic artists from all over the world. We all came away ready to make art!
And then on Saturday and Sunday, those who were in the Life Lines workshop had an equally inspiring experience. We began with a full sheet of Arches text wove paper, roughly drew lines to divide it tic-tac-toe style into 9 spaces, and then filled the spaces with various exercises. Some were freehand writing exercises done with both dominant and non dominant hand, some were geometric images, made with a compass and then also a straight edge. Eventually, we tore the papers down in accordance with the golden rectangle proportions, and then continued to work on them, adding more circles, lines, and color, with a variety of tools and media. The end results will give us lots to work on for many creative days ahead.
Pamela was a wonderful teacher. She teaches a process, not a specific lettering type or project. Using the inspiration of the geometry of the universe, we were encouraged to see the world through new eyes, and to create art using what we had learned to see. We will continue to learn from this class for years to come.

I challenge you to read the calligraphy over the two art deco doors on the north side of the building. This calligraphy helped to place the Carver Center building on the National Registry of Historic Buildings.
