Thoughts From the President

Best wishes to you and your families for a wonderful New Year! Twenty-twenty (2020) not only has a nice ring to it- it is the start of a new decade. If you have set some calligraphic goals to learn new calligraphic hands, expand your artistic horizons, perhaps exhibit your artwork for the first time, your Guild has programs planned for next year to help you meet your goals. Our first program of the year will feature the works of Hermann Zapf, presented by Suzan O’Conner. At the mini workshop, we will be making Valentine’s Day Cards for the Women’s Shelter. Please also bring some purchased cards for the kids at the shelter to use. We will have sign up sheets for the Briscoe Museum Pony Express Loveletters program in February. I encourage you to sign up- it is great fun, plus is a great community outreach program for us. Also, please be thinking of who you would like to nominate for the Paul Freeman Award. We have many volunteers who donate their time and energy to making the Guild better; this is a great way to say thank you. For those of you who enjoy decorating envelopes, we have received an invitation to participate in the Graceful Envelope contest, sponsored by the Washington Calligraphers Guild. I will have information available for you at the January meeting. Last, but certainly not least, please bring any current artistic projects, completed or not, to the Share Table. Don’t be shy- everyone loves to see them!

January 2020 General Meeting

Zapf4
PROGRAM TITLE: “A Legacy of Letters: Hermann Zapf”

PROGRAM DESRIPTION

This program celebrates the work of one of the most influential letter designers of our time: Hermann Zapf. In a career that spanned over seven decades, Zapf worked as a calligrapher, typeface creator, book artist, author and teacher. He created around 200 typefaces in numerous alphabets, including Latin, Cyrillic, Arabic, and Cherokee. Hisflexibility in designing letterforms for changing technologies and multiple languages is legendary.

We will see many examples of his beautiful work, including a rare, short film of Zapf himself demonstrating his calligraphic techniques as a consultant to Hallmark Cards. We will also share in the wit and wisdom of his design philosophy and discuss how we might apply it to our own work.

Come and learn more about the man who elegantly shaped the world of modern letters. We have so much to learn from him!
EARLY BIRD TITLE: “Selected Samples: Hermann Zapf”

January 2020 Mini Workshop

Come one, Come all!

Our annual Valentine Card making for the Battered Women’s Shelter is the January 16th mini workshop. We give away all the wonderful cards, but you get directions to make them again at home. We supply everything so bring just yourselves for a great evening of fun! There is no supply list to bring other than to look forward to a good time making valentines for the Battered Women's Shelter. There will be handouts so cards can be reproduced again at home.

If you can also bring some purchased cards for the kids at the shelter to use, that would be amazing!
