Flourishes - April 2001
Cover Artist *** Pauline Sager
What a wonderful meeting we had! The food was a wonderful spread, and the array of Art Journals at the Early Bird Special was amazing. Thank you to all our members who brought such creative journals to share! The nominees for the Paul Freedom award were announced by Shirley Ginn, as she reminded us that we'll vote on this important award next month! Thanks go to Shirley for chairing the Board Meeting in my absence last month, and to Rod Smith for volunteering to serve on the CD committee. We're still looking for 1 more person for that committee... Nikki Bonnett's workshop for May 19 & 20 has filled very quickly, so please let Jill Adams know if you want to attend -- we'll add the 21st and 22nd if necessary for this experience. Our program was so educational, well planned, and inspirational -- as the craft of book binding and art journaling (her journals are so beautiful and fascinating) -- she is also a first rate standup comedienne! Laughter and learning -- what a potent combo! Beverly Carter's Quilling Mini Workshop was such a neat surprise -- I could actually do that craft, and the tools -- toothpick, shredded paper, cardboard covered with waxed paper, and glue -- with a low tech, high quality result! Thanks, Bev! Be sure to go on 15 March to the Mini - with Fritz Harvy as instructor -- it'll be terrific! What plans are in the works for next month, our 25th Birthday Bash, you ask?!! Here are a few memos while you wait for our magical month: * Be sure to decorate your invitation in this newsletter, and bring it with you next month to the meeting. * Be sure to bring work by yourself and/or other Guild members for display at our special member exhibition at the Party ... bring table easel, if you have any (a great suggestion by Sally Gooze for seeing work of 25 years)!! * Call Sylvia Stanley, and let her know that you'll donate things to the Goodie Bags in April. *And while you have Sylvia on the phone, offer to decorate a few of those Bags for all the goodies to go into! * Anticipate all the "way-our-of-town" and "haven't seen you in a coon's age" members that are coming -- I know of some B*I*G Surprises!! * Be working on
at least one piece for our "Silver Celebration" Juried
Annual Exhibition -- dates to remember: 2 April - noon to 5 p.m.
TURN IN at Ventana Gallery Lots of invitations will be available through the Gallery (and also at the Mini Workshop) Be sure to invite everyone that you know~ I can hardly wait -- this is a very exciting time for our Guild -- as a child I counted, to great events by the number of wake ups until the big day came -- So...it's 35 wake ups or a mini, 2 Reggies, and a turn in! Activities Early Bird Happy Anniversary SACG This is the 25th Anniversary of the San Antonio Calligraphers Guild. The Early Bird Presentation will be the show and tell of our decorated invitations. Be sure to fill in your “25 YEARS” and the candle with a unique design, and then bring the invitation with you for all to see at the party. Secret Pal 2001 Sign-up forms were available at the March meeting. The committee has some great plans in store for us this year, so be sure to take part. Submit your completed form to Francene Smith or another member of the committee in April. Program PARTY! PARTY! PARTY! We will be celebrating our 25th Anniversary at the April meeting. There will be party favor goodie bags to take home, there will be great food, great friends, and lots of time to socialize and reminisce. If you currently possess any of your own or another member’s artwork, please bring it to show at the meeting. We will have tables set up and the artwork will be exhibited flat unless you have a table easel for it. Of course, we include broadsides, books, masks and shoes, platters, and anything else you or a fellow member may have calligraphed in the past. Remember that we have many more recent members who have not had the opportunity to see some of the work that we own. All would love to share in the past accomplishments of our Guild and see the growth of our members’ work over the years. Mini-Workshop Eraser Carving with Shirley GinnWe will be carving our own designs into erasers. No need to bring a special design – Shirley will show us how to “find “ a design quickly and easily. Shirley will supply the erasers at minimal cost. All participants are asked to bring: 2 pencils, a small rubber band, an X-acto knife and/or a linoleum carving tool, and scissors. There is no limit on class size. This promises to be great fun and will provide us yet another application for our letter arts. |

N I K I B O N N ETT Mixed Media ~ Fiber Art Collage May 19-20, 2001 All of us who attended the May, 2001, meeting and were treated to Niki Bonnett’s program on fiber art collage have been waiting anxiously for this workshop. Niki Bonnett received her BFA in Illustration from the Rhode island School of Design in 1978, and was a graphic designer for fifteen years. She is now a full time artist engaged in mixed media work, with an emphasis on textiles, including art quilts and fabric/paper collages and assemblages. Her work has been exhibited nationally and she has recently studied with Jane Dunnewold, learning about the “complex cloth” surface design processes, combining them with additional processes to create her unique fabric collages. Niki has considerable teaching experience. She will be combining her Fabric/Paper Collages class with her Beyond Clip Art class to make a composite for our Guild. This will be a unique experience for calligraphers interested in alternative applications for letter arts. Niki will be teaching her workshop on May 19-20, at the Discover School, from 9-4 each day. Cost of the workshop is $75, including the $15 supply fee. Contact Jill Adams to sign up or for further info. Supply List: 1. WORKSHOP NEWS We treated ourselves to the Melissa Dinwiddie New World Neuland Workshop in February and had a fantastic time. We all enjoyed getting to know Melissa and especially appreciated her relaxed but meticulous approach to calligraphy and book arts. Save the date for Timothy Botts. He will be coming on October 6, 2001, for a one-day Saturday workshop (we’re not sure what he will be teaching) and possibly for a lecture the evening before. The workshop committee will not sign anyone up until September, and there will probably be a mail-in sign up, with first come-first serve based on postmark. Also save the date for Carol Pallesen’s Modern Day Book of Hours workshop on April 6-7, 2002, and for Marsha Brady’s collage book and foundational the first weekend of September, October, and November, 2002. |

Thanks for the Art Journals Bonnie Houser extends a special thank you to all who brought their art journals for the Early Bird Presentation at the march meeting. What a treat for the eyes to get to see such personal creations by our members. And we all extend a special thank you to Wendy Davis for a lovely presentation of her art journals. Seeing her work was an inspiration to us all. It was both entertaining and enlightening to learn about the construction of her books and the evolution of her art journals. We all need to remember that Wendy never leaves home without one, and we can take a lesson from how she finds pleasure in documenting her life’s journey via words, art, and coffee and molé stains. |
