Flourishes -- December 2001

MMO Where is the cooler weather, guys? Wasn't Timothy Botts great?! What a hard act ot follow this month, but our very own Mary Bowman was certainly up to the task -- her program on the World of Oriental Calligraphy and Painting was fascinating -- from her traditional sitting-on-knees-on-a-rice-mat presentation (on top of a table -- you had to see it to believe it!) and a rapid stand-up (uh, sit-down actually!) comedian style, all the way to the ephemeral inspirational works that she presented and demonstrated -- a truly great evening! Thanks so much, Mary! We are sold out! No more 2002
Calendars! We made some important decisions at our November
meeting: * We also voted to charge $20 for attendance at the Saturday Specials. At this price, fewer students are needed (10) in order for the class to make. The next Saturday Special is December 1st, from 9:30 - 4:30 (I announced 9-5 at the meeting - W.R.O.N.G -- sorry!) *Our Holiday Party will be at Leslie Winakur's
home. Please make: * Our Early Bird in December is a Show'n'Sale of members' work -- I can hardly wait to see all the creativity -- a feast for the eyes, while we have a feast for our tummies! * We elected Kaye Yarbrough as the third member of our nominating committee to serve with Sally Gooze and Pam Thomas -- as they ask (in person or by phone) for officer positions for a slate, please consider saying yes. It's a great way to be an integral part or our Guild. See you at our November Mini with Helen Rasplicka, on Decorated Letters! New Grandma of Brenden Drew Gillikin Maggie |

bulletin board THANK YOU to Karen Veni, Armida Gonzales, and Cheri Wolf for the delicious hospitality spread in November.CONGRATULATIONS to the door prize winners in November: Bill Waddington won the calligraphy puzzle donated by Nancy McHugh. Camille Storment won the artist book donated by Angie Murray. Pam Braha won the collage paper and calendar donated by Beverly Carter. And Laura Heye won the collage materials and stamps donated by Janice Anabtawi. Thank you so much to all of our generous donors. WELCOME to our new members, Sally Hoffman, a friend of Jill Adams, and Bill Gifford, a long time member who happily has returned. Our total membership now stands at 105 strong! We were also excited to welcome Martha Blackwelder who came to visit in November. Martha is the curator of Asian art at the San Antonio Museum of Art and came to join us for Mary Bowman’s wonderful presentation of oriental calligraphic painting. The MAILING COMMITTEE is in need of one more person to assist with getting the newsletters out. Contact Mavis Caudill if you are interested. CALENDAR 2002 is sold out! Thanks to Darla Peek and her wonderful committee, and thanks to all who purchased this year’s calendar. We do still need a chairperson for Calendar 2003 if there is to be one. Contact Maggie Gillikin if you would like to volunteer for this job. The revised guidelines for the SPRING EXHIBIT were discussed at length and accepted by the membership in November. Please refer to your October newsletter if you need to review these prior to our exhibit in April. The LIBRARY will be inventoried in January, so please be sure to return all books by the January meeting so that Maggie Gillikin and Sally Gooze can do an accurate job. The library now contains a lovely copy of Proverbs, signed and dedicated by Tim Botts in memory of Millie Hosford. Also, please remember that the Newsletter Library is available for check-out. Beverly Carter has meticulously catalogued all of the newsletters we receive from other guilds and they are in our library. Our thanks to SHIRLEY GINN and JOANNE PACELLI for presenting such an informative Early Bird Special on the use of Japanese stick ink. And thank you also to MARY BOWMAN for her oriental calligraphy program. What a treat it was to see Mary on that table on her Japanese mat on her knees, painting away and telling such entertaining stories as she worked. We voted to accept the proposed $20 fee per person for SATURDAY SPECIALS. This means we will only need a minimum of 10 people for the class to make, and we will be able to pay the $25 fee for the room at the Church and a $175 fee to the teacher. The Board has agreed that if there are more than 10 students in the class, the maximum teacher fee will be $200, and any profit thereafter will go to the general operating fund. BILL WADDINGTON sends a special thank you to all those who purchased his “Nine-Eleven-Two Thousand One” memorial note cards. A total of $375 was collected from the sale of 75 note cards and the money was sent to the New York State WTC Relief fund on October 11, 2001. If you need an extra DIRECTORY to replace the one you’re bound to misplace, one can be purchased from Jill Adams for $2. RUDY GONZALES had eye surgery the same day as the last meeting, Nov 1. We wish him a speedy recovery!! |

Calligraphic
Collage Jacqueline Sullivan is a graphic designer with more than 25 years experience in the lettering arts. As a child she was often asked to create signs and advertising materials for her father’s business. The frustration resulting from these attempts led to a life long study of letter forms. In her classes, Jacqueline emphasizes experimentation and creative play. Students are encouraged to “push” materials and processes to find their own unique style and techniques. These techniques are then refined, documented and utilized within the context of sound composition. The challenge is always to create and refine. Jacqueline’s work has been exhibited widely and won many awards. Currently she serves as Journal Editor and Exhibit Coordinator for the Michigan Association of Calligraphers. Discovery School, 9-4 each day. Do you love Collage, but can't quite figure out where to start? Or once you start, is it hard to figure out when to stop, and how to give your collage work the extra "ZING" that makes them truly exciting works of art? This workshop teaches collage utilizing calligraphic marks, letters, etc. We will create some calligraphic elements and combine them with papers, prints and found objects to create an exciting abstract work. The principles of design, as they apply to collage will be an integral part of this workshop. This is just the right combination of creative fun and the study of design. |

AN END AND A BEGINNING
The “Reggie Year” ends on November 17, and we have Bill Waddington’s exquisite T-shirt design as our souvenir of a wonderful experience. This year of education would never have been possible without such an active Guild, which provided encouragement and moral support for all participants. The class would like to thank every one of our members for making this dream a reality. Reggie has imparted all he knows, but the most important thing has taught us is to continue the learning process on our own. Over the coming months and years, we hope to honor his spirit and energy by sharing what we’ve learned. We hope that this “filtering down” process will eventually benefit everyone.
