Everyone,Our first meeting of the New Year was lots of fun. It was great to see everybody back, ready and anxious to do great things. Thank you, as always, to our Hospitality Committee for a delicious array of snacks. We definitely seem to have less crowding and hurrying now that we have the refreshments available both before the meeting and during the break. We had an important vote regarding the calendar's future, and it was overwhelmingly agreed that we should continue to have a calendar. So start thinking about themes for next year - it's never too early! We also voted to exchange Valentine's Day cards at the February meeting. This will work as usual - each person gets to choose as many cards from the bag as he or she contributes. Please also remember to bring an extra Valentine for the patients at Warm Springs. They always appreciate our work and a little extra attention. We had a brief preview of the "26 Letters" and all I can say is WOW! The few we saw were a hard act to follow and a terrific start for our project. I can hardly wait to see the rest. Please keep in mind that this is our Spring Exhibit theme, so it's not too early to start thinking about your piece(s) for the exhibit. It's a nice broad theme that allows plenty of variety. Shirley Young presented a fascinating Early Bird on One Stroke painting and had us all mesmerized. And then she went on to present a great program on borders. Thank you, Shirley, for a doubly great night. Our next Board meeting will be at Joan's house on January 27 and all are always welcome. So, let's get to work on those exhibit pieces - spring is just around the corner. See you soon.

Two birds are better than one - arrive early (6:30 p.m.) for the Early Bird demonstration on "Japanese Lettering." Mikiko Group will demonstrate authentic Japanese characters, with the traditional tools and Mary Bowman will be our guide for the evening. Mikiko is Japanese raised and trained in native calligraphy. February Program The February 3 program will surely inspire valentine creations. Kate Bergquist, a member of the Capital City Scribes and our SACG, will demonstrate "Decorated Letters with Hearts and Roses" - for a preview, see our February cover. Kate will combine writing with watercolor hearts and roses. Following her demonstration, she plans a short discussion and then it's hands-on if you are interested. This talented graphic designer and calligrapher invites you to bring the supplies listed below if you wish to work along with her. Thinking of Members Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to Rebecca Ingram on the death of her father. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you. We were glad to see Pauline Sager at the January meeting after her big asthma attack in December that wrecked her holiday plans. And, it was good to see B. J. Nichol at the meeting after her recent surgery. |
Congratulations! Rosemarie did the artwork for a new book. Her watercolor piece graces the cover of Mrs. Ann Tobin Rowland's book "There Is a Reason for Rules - They Work!" Better known as Miss Ninny, Mrs. Rowland is our local expert on manners and etiquette. Look for Mrs. Rowland's book at the Twig Book Store on Broadway. Congratulations to Rosemarie! Eleanor Russell had good news from Herweck's. She opened a package she received in the mail and it contained a wonderful portable watercolor set. Eleanor called Herweck's for an explanation. ?? She won a recent contest; the prize was the watercolor set. The moral of the story - sign up every chance you get at Herweck's. Paint your heart out and congratulations, Eleanor! DP |
Major Workshop Mark your calendar and make plans to attend another exciting workshop. Joan Schmitz will have all the information for us in the March issue of Flourishes. The timing on this workshop is perfect - the week following the workshop is prime time for working on our pieces for the Spring Exhibit. Everyone who attends the workshop will get tips and advice on great designs. |

Letters -- the Poster Leslie's reaction to the preview of letters that were turned in at the January meeting was WOW! The committee met last week to work on copy and to look over the artwork. Overall, WOW! is an accurate description. Our love of letters is very apparent. Just wait 'til you see the finished product. We plan to debut the poster with the April edition of Flourishes. Timothy Botts & The Psalms If you're in Santa Ana, CA, visit the Timothy Botts exhibit of twenty-five pieces from his collection called The Psalms. Mars Carve Pavasa sent a news item out via e-mail about a new product coming out in February called Mars Carve. The Staedtler-Mars Company is coming out with some new LARGER/THICKER carving blocks. For all you stamp carvers out there, this will be good news I'm sure! I'm told the new blocks will be available sometime in February. She sent the info out to several people on her e-mail list, one of the friends she sent it to responded with a message that she won the contest to name the new carving block - Mars Carve. This is timely news with our Early Bird presentation from Mary and Mikiko. |
National Handwriting Day Kate Gladstone was interviewed for an article for the Express-News regarding handwriting. She was told the article would appear Friday, January 21st - two days before National Handwriting Day. According to the 2000 SACG Calendar - National Handwriting Day is on Saturday, January 29th. Watch for it. |

Brush Script Cyberstudy is pleased to
announce our staff for the spring semester: Enrollment is now being accepted for the upcoming Cyberstudy program, Pointed Brush Script to begin March 20, 2000. Cyberstudy is an on-line calligraphic study group, working together towards a better understanding of the lettering arts. Cyberstudy offers students the opportunity to work the assignments on their own (good for self-motivated calligraphers), or to participate in our Tutorial Program, a correspondence-style course that follows along with the lessons. In addition, we have an Internet discussion group (Cyberstudy@Onelist.com), where the subject being studied is talked about, with many questions and answers following. Cyberstudy's student body is made up of calligraphers in all stages of development, from all corners of the globe. The Graceful Envelope Contest We received information from the Smithsonian Institution's National Postal Museum regarding the Graceful Envelope Contest 2000. They invite participants to illustrate a significant story or event from the past century on their envelope. The envelope must actually be mailed. Seventy-five winning entries will be displayed in a binder on a pedestal or displayed in an exhibition case. Complete contest rules and regulations are posted at their web site: http://www.si.edu/postal/education/graceenvelope/gracefuledstart.html Envelopes must be at least 3 1/2" x 5 1/2" and no larger than 5 1/2" x 7 1/2". Entries must be postmarked no later than Friday, March 17, 2000 and received in the museum by March 31, 2000. Your envelope must be sealed, processed and delivered by the United States Postal Service as First Class Mail. Print your name and complete address on the back of the envelope - legibly. The envelope depth must not exceed 1/4 inch - for display purposes. Each contestant may submit ONE entry, more than one submitted - they would judge the first entry received. The contest is limited to adults age 18 and over. New rules this year: Entry may NOT be wrapped in a separate envelope or in any protective covering. Stamp MUST be cancelled, by hand or otherwise. Entry MUST be an envelope, no postcards. They will not acknowledge receipt of entries;
however, all contestants will be notified as to the final
status of their entry by April 24, 2000. All entries
become the property of the museum and will not be
returned. The winning pieces will be displayed in the Art

They would love to be able to refer these people to someone.
