Cover Artist: Glass Etching by Shawn Behrens

Kaye’s Korner

Dear Friends,

Our new year got a wonderful start with our January meeting.  We had a large crowd and the sharing of the handmade cards was enlightening and inspiring.  Maggie gave us some good tips on using gold gouache and a ruling pen to add some pizzaz to our work.  B.J. Grant had a hands-on program and many ideas for us to make for cards and favors for our friends and the Battered Women’s Shelter.  We can make additional ones at home this month and bring them to the February meeting for Valentine surprises for the women and the children.  Also, we enjoy bringing the small boxes of assorted  cards for the children to take to school for their exchanges.  Personal grooming items are always welcomed at the shelter.  Don’t forget to make a card to exchange with another guild member.

In consideration of the new year and new beginnings,  I think about the creative way  we calligraphers view signs and ads and any grouping of words and I think author  Rory Noland explained it very well in the following paragraph:

“Artists look at things differently than non artists do.
They notice detail;  they appreciate nuance and beauty.
Some people might look at the evening sky and all they see is a bunch of stars.
But an artist looks at it and sees beauty and meaning.
Debussy was so moved by the evening sky that he wrote
Clair de lune.
Van Gogh painted
Starry Night.”

So I challenge you this year to see how many different media with which you can experiment.  Also why not work on an original alphabet?  Go wild with color for a good stretch instead of sticking with black ink and white paper.  (I need to do this.) Even if it is ugly you learned a lot.  Some weeks all I learn is what doesn’t work …and that is so helpful.

Leslie and I will get together in Austin this month for sharing of ideas and discussing teachers for our major workshops with other representatives from the Guilds in Texas and Oklahoma. This annual gathering is known as the SWCC (Southwest Calligraphy Conference).  We will report to you what we learn at the February meeting.

The teachers and the courses at the 25th International Lettering Conference - which will be held this year the last week of July in Dallas and is known as Legacies - have been posted online.  You can access this at  http://www.legacies2005.com.

Just reading the classes offered and seeing the examples is thrilling.    Shirley Ginn, our liaison to the conference, is keeping in close touch with the chairman, Angie Vangalis.  The entire conference will be held at the air-conditioned Hyatt Regency Hotel at the airport.  It will never be this close to San Antonio again and it is not to be missed if you can possibly swing it.

 Have a great month!

 Cheers, Kaye

Our new year is off to a wonderful start, with thanks to our January hospitality hosts:  Jane Fair, Sandy Nasello, Cher Solis, Karen Veni, & Cheri Wolf.  As always, we are grateful to co-chairs Loni Carlson and Jeff Pyle for a job well done.

The Calligraphy Faire which was held in November did break even, despite rather low attendance.  We are looking into other venues for future activities, since it is apparent that we need to take our show to where the people are, rather than continue to hope that they will find us.  If you have any ideas for exhibit or Faire venues, please contact our President, Kaye Yarbrough.  Keep in mind that we must always be conscious of the need for adequate security whenever the venue is open or closed.

The January Card-A-Thon with BJ Grant was terrific fun.  We made several different kinds of cards with BJ and her guest Jo.  Maggie Gillikin gave a little ruling pen demo that helped us embellish our cards. Many cards have already been donated to the box for the Women’s Shelter, but there’s plenty of room for more.  Please remember that the women and children in the shelter leave home with nothing.  They can always use toiletries - nothing fancy is necessary - the basics, like toothpaste, deodorant, soap, washcloths, are always in short supply.  Also, please remember that when Valentine’s Day arrives, the children need those little Valentines that they exchange at school.  So keep them in mind when you do your shopping.  Bring everything to the February meeting and the Guild will see that our donations arrive at the shelter on time.

And let’s remember our own guild’s

Valentine Card Exchange. You may bring a card or bookmark to exchange with another member.   If you are a new member, do not be intimidated!  This is just for fun and we all love to give as well as receive.  So use this opportunity to do something creative and to share it with everyone.

Congratulations to our Door Prize winners in January.  These include Carol Keith, BJ Grant, Jo Drake, Loni Carlson, Mavis Caudill-Lummen, Cher Solis, Bonnie Davis, & Sylvia Stanley.  And thank you so much to Nancy Meier for her door prize donations.  If you have any donations, please contact Sally Theus, who reminds us that these are to be related to calligraphic arts and supplies.

Thank you to Jo Drake, our official photographer, for all of the lovely pictures on this page.

February Activities

Early Bird and Program

A Night With Our Library

Thursday, February 6, 2005  -  7-9 pm

Our Guild is fortunate to own a library full of intriguing volumes, many of which are now out of print.  The long awaited library inventory is complete.  The books are categorized and now happily rest in their ten rolling boxes.

During Early Bird time, we will all have an opportunity to peruse the library at our leisure.  During the Program, we will discuss the wealth of materials at our disposal, including the books, videos, CD’s, and the Gocco printer.  Everyone will receive a new inventory list.  Those who are not present will receive theirs in the mail with the next newsletter.

If you are one of the ten volunteers who offered to be responsible for one box, please be sure to attend so that you can take your box with you at the end of the meeting.

Mini Workshop

Thursday, February 17, 2005  -  7-9 pm

Glass Etching with Shawn Behrens

We will be learning the most basic form of glass etching - using etching cream -  as well as briefly covering and viewing examples of other methods of etching and their application. I will be providing a piece of regular glass (approx.5”x7”) already masked, as well as the etching cream.  There is a $2.00 supply fee for those materials.

 Supply List:

·          Any kind of craft knife, X-acto™ or scalpel for cutting your design out of the masking

·          Pens, markers, stamps - anything you want to transfer the lettering or image onto the masking tape.  Or you can letter directly on the tape.

·          Portable light box (for those of you who have them - not necessary to buy one) if you want to use lines or trace a design with it.  I will bring mine for anyone wanting to use it.

·      A word or design - keep it simple, and blocky letters like Neuland are easiest to cut out.  I will bring several alphabets for reference.

Don’t think !   Just get it down

A Major Workshop with Judy Melvin

“I absolutely love to make art and explore mixed-media mayhem and the endless possibilities.”

Saturday and Sunday, April 9-10, 2005, 9-4:30, Discovery School
Repeated Monday and Tuesday, April 11-12, 9:00-4:30 at the Church

Work spontaneously for a few days—one of Judy’s favorite methods for creating new art and backgrounds.  You will work quickly on several pieces at once, allowing one to feed into the next.  The size will be about 9”x17”.

Color, words, marks, backgrounds...this is a hands-on brainstorming experience, and a way to get started on a “series” of related pieces.  Some experience with color would help, and the command of one or two alphabets.  (BUT there have been a few non-calligraphers who used only handwriting and line art and created some amazing stuff!)

Much of the time will be used to test experimental and/or new materials which oculd be used to add depth and interest to your work.  The pieces will be layered and rescued, selectively edited, or even used for collage.  Basic design principles and thinking later on will pull them together… and the magic happens!

Judy will bring a variety of media for all to try, but she is counting on us all to have the entire supply list and to bring any favorite or new medium we may want to test.

Sign up for this class begins at the February meeting.

Class fee:  $60.  This includes your supply fee of $5.  It does not include paper costs, estimated to be approximately $10.  Paper can be purchased at the workshop from Joan Schmitz.

Supply List:

·          Lots of paint and water containers—old yogurt cups are good for paint.

·          Brushes – watercolor, all kinds - for laying a wash, pointer and flat for writing, a synthetic (cheap) brush for laying bleach

·          Usual writing tools

·          X-acto knife with #11 blade

·          PVA glue or glue stick

·          Lots of water containers and paper towels

·          A surface to work on (to save table surfaces)

·          Tape - artist’s or blue or low tack scotch masking, 1/2”

·          Gouache—any colors

·          Words

·          Any favorite tools or supplies, and any untested medium

·          Collage papers

·          Gold leaf

·          Paper:  4 sheets Arches Text Wove 25”x20”(half sheets) torn into thirds (8˝”x20”) and 1 sheet of Arches Black Cover 22”x30”

Ghost Ranch Class

An invitation to Lettering & Landscape

The act of writing is full of pleasure that increases with skill.  We will explore lettering through a collection of writing implements and a series of experiments based on rhythmical writing patterns, music and poetry.  Each student will begin with their own handwriting as a place of departure.  This workshop is part of a series that investigates the ways that the universal elements of line, pattern, and texture, as they are found in landscape, can be repeated through writing, drawing, and painting.  Students will make journals of their work.

Date:  May 14-20, 2005. Time:  5PM Saturday to noon on Friday.  Ghost Ranch, Abiqui, New Mexico.  Room, board, and workshop for the week - $1200, plus $20 supplies.

A New Book By A Talented Calligrapher

CALLIGRAPHY:  EASEL-DOES-IT
BY NANCY OUCHIDA-HOWELLS

This thoroughly illustrated guide uses an innovative photographic method of displaying movement on the page that shows whole sequences of motion rather than step-by-step highlights.  It eases and makes enjoyable the understanding, learning and mastering of the skills involved in creating calligraphy projects.  The projects combine calligraphy with various art techniques to make the process fresh and innovative, useful, and achievable.  The unique format includes a wire binding with two covered spines so that the book can be shelved like a book or stand up like an easel for handy viewing.

Nancy is an accomplished award-winning calligrapher who has taught calligraphy for over 30 years.  And she is the wife of David Howells, honorary member of SACG and creator of one of our Paul Freeman Award pieces.  Her new book is available at local book stores and through John Neal Bookseller.

Our best wishes to Gigi Starnes for a speedy recovery from her recent medical problems.  At this writing, Gigi is doing quite well and just taking it easy, which is easier
