February Activities

Early Bird

Past President's Book
Remember all those books you contributed to and then never got to see again? This is your chance to come enjoy them at your leisure. You might even get to touch them!

Remember that the Early Bird will begin at 6:30 from now on.

Valentine Card Exchange
Please bring one handmade card to exchange at the February meeting. Remember to put it in the red envelope donated by Hallmark and delivered by Janice Anabtawi.

Also, please make extra cards for the women and children at the Battered Women’s Shelter. They so enjoyed our Xmas cards. If you are able, please also bring a little package of kids’ valentines for the school age children.

Program

Helen Rasplicka
A Retrospective
Helen Rasplicka, a charter member of our guild, will present “A Journey,” a retrospective of her artistic works. Helen will share how she becomes inspired to create a variety of art. Please come and enjoy Helen’s artistic journey that will inspire you to continue your own.

Show and Tell
Please remember to bring your Holiday cards and bookmarks for show and tell. Everyone would like a chance to look them over and share them with you.

Mini-Workshop
Beverly Carter
Quilling
Quilling is also known as paper filigree. This art has been around for 500 years. Originally, the paper was wrapped around porcupine quills or feather quills. Quills were also used as writing instruments, and were made form the wing feathers of the turkey, goose, swan, or crow.

Beverly taught quilling a few years ago, and her class filled. This is a repeat, command performance! She will provide all supplies at no extra cost.

The lucky door prize winners in January were Sally Gooze, Melanie Capps, Jill Adams, Sylvia Stanley, and Karen Veni. Please remember that the door prize committee is always in the market for handmade donations.

Our Nominating Committee consists of Pam Thomas, Bonnie Houser, and Jill Adams. Thank you for volunteering.

Please make a note that we will be returning to the usual meeting times as of February. Early Bird at 6:30, Meeting at 7:00. We can set up in advance at 6:00 if necessary.

Thanks to Bonnie Houser for the Tyvek Early Bird demonstration and for sharing her recipes for paint. We had a great time.

Plans are under way for our Silver Anniversary Celebration at the April general meeting. Pauline Sager is planning a dazzling newsletter cover, Pam Thomas is coordinating the decorations, and Sylvia Stanley is working on recognizing members for their years of participation in the guild. We are considering small gift bags for ourselves. If you have any ideas or would like to help with the plans for the party, please contact Maggie, Pam or Sylvia.

Congratulations to the winners of Maggie’s November contest: BJ Grant, Pam Thomas, Shirley Ginn, Joanne Pacelli, and Pam Braha.

Reminder: The Silver Celebration Exhibit will open on Friday, April 6. Turn-in date is April 3. Sharon Zeugin has agreed to be our judge. This should be a very special show.

May 3 is the deadline for turning in artwork for Calendar 2002. Contact Darla Peek, calendar editor, with any questions.

Our condolences to Lynn Rutland on the loss of her mother-in-law.

Melissa Dinwiddie Workshop
Neuland
Feb 10-11, repeated on Feb 12-13

This is going to be a fantastic workshop. Be sure to sign up for this wonderful experience with a first-class calligrapher. Remember that this is the class we’ve chosen to treat ourselves to with the profits from the 26 Letter project. If you’ve bought posters and/or the 26 Letter Books made from the posters, if you donated artwork to the poster, if you even just encouraged those who worked on this project and said “nice job” you belong in this workshop!

Neuland is a deceiving hand. It looks simple from a distance but it is complex and very exciting. This is a terrific opportunity to learn about creating a hand from type and to learn about pen manipulation. Don’t miss it! We will start out on Day 1 by learning how to make the Neuland alphabet, and move into some "broadside" projects in the afternoon so we can put our new lettering skills to use.  On Day 2 we'll learn a more sophisticated version of the alphabet in the morning, and work on some books and other 3-D projecdts after lunch.  Melissa is a very dynamic instructor and we’re looking forward to a rewarding and stimulating workshop.  And don’t forget that all are invited to the slide show presentation and on February 9, 7-9 PM, at the home of Leslie Winakur. The directions to her home and the map are in your January newsletter (the one with the angel on the cover). The title of the lecture is “From Chaos to Creation: The Making of a Commissioned Piece.” This is a photographic documentary of the making of a full scale commissioned piece from the initial contact with the client to the finished product.
Contact Jill Adams to register. Workshop fee is only $25 for the full 2 days. The slide show and lecture are free of charge.

SA Arts and Letters

340-4422
Once you have learned formal Italic, it is an easy step to gothicized italic. Unlike the regimented, vertically stressed angular forms of medieval gothic scripts, this is a more loosely constructed, pointed cursive
script. Advanced students only. $45.

Class News

The first month of the yearlong class went very well. Everyone was stimulated and inspired. Thanks again to Joan Schmitz for making this dream a reality. Thank you also to Maggie Gillikin for coordinating the space and the blackboard. And thank you to Pam Thomas for coordinating dinner, and to Sally Gooze for coordinating supply orders. Please contact them to contribute to dinner and to order for next month.

Field Trip

Thank you to Bosworth Papers for an informative and generous program in January. Sally Gooze will have a sign-up sheet at the February meeting for all interested in a shopping spree at Bosworth in the near future

Remember
The Library

We have a huge collection of calligraphy and art books in our library. Denise Adler has the catalogs and is taking book orders for our personal libraries at each meeting. Be sure to look over the selections and take advantage of these opportunities.

SAVE THE DATE

Niki Bonnett will be with us for the May 19-20 major workshop: “Mixed Media Fabric Collage.”

Niki presented the program last spring and so impressed us all that we had to have her back! She does amazing work with fabric and photocopiers. Her classes place a strong emphasis on original thinking and open new avenues of creative possibilities for her students, whatever their medium or level of expertise.
