MMO MMII * TWO THOUSAND TWO * MMII * TWO THOUSAND TWO * MMII Welcome to 2002! The weather was terrible, but the
company was just great at our January 3rd Meeting! Wonderful
volunteers came forward at the meeting: We decided to launch a new fundraiser, again based on our 26 Letter Project -- It will be called "A House of Cards" -- the individual letters are cut out as a "deck" of cards, housed in a box, covered in silk book cloth with 24k gold trim. A limited edition of 100 will be made, to be sold at $25.00 each. Play days, to construct them, will be announced in February. By the show of hands, about 40 of the edition will be pre-sold when we begin to take reservations! And with the profits from this fundraiser's edition, we hope to offer another wonderful workshop with a nationally recognized teacher, for our Guild -- (like the one we had with Melissa Dinwirddie) -- such fun ahead in 2002! The library was inventoried -- thanks go to Sally Gooze and Pam Thomas -- we'll print a list soon -- please read the list of missing books, and check to see if you've been taking good care of them -- if you have, please call me, and then we'll get them into the inventory and back in circulation -- thanks! Next month -- February -- the Mini-Workshop will be the Decorated Letter with Helen Rasplicka, instead of the scheduled one in the Directory. And we'll have Flourishing with Joan Schmitz this month, as well as our Saturday Special with Joannie Carolingian and Book Making with Maggie (me!) [Call Shirley Ginn to sign up for the Saturday Special!] Our program was technical, precise, and w o n d e r f u l! We learned so much about our rights of artistic creation and copyright -- thanks, Melanie, for providing such a needed program for calligraphers -- it was great! Please remember our Valentine Exchange next month -- and several for the Battered Women's Shelter. The packages of valentine cards for kids to take to school would also be great -- if you need a red envelope for your exchange card, call me!! Maggie |
February Activities Early Bird The Early Bird and the Program for February are entitled Tool Time I. This will be another part of the trickle down of information from the Reggie Ezell class in 2001. We have already learned about grinding and using ink sticks, and about different kinds of rulers. Now it’s time to consider which equipment we might want to have on the “always stuff” list for workshops. The basic tools will be discussed and demonstrated. This should be an informative and fun presentation for beginners and seasoned calligraphers alike. Hopefully, at the end of this evening, we will no longer feel the need to pack up our entire studios and bring everything we own to the next workshop! Helen Rasplicka will teach the mini-workshop on February 21, 7 PM, at the usual meeting place. The subject is The Decorated Letter, and the supply list is as follows:
A pencil and a ruler or small t-square. Mini-Workshop Happy Valentine’s Day! Remember to bring your hand crafted valentine card or bookmark for exchange with another member, in the red envelope provided at the meeting. And please bring valentines for the Battered Women’s Shelter, for women and for children. They very much appreciated our holiday gifts and cards. Valentine’s Day is an especially difficult one for these families and we would love to make it a bit easier for them. The children especially can use the little valentine packages for school, since no one else will be able to provide those for them. |

Library News Over the winter holiday, Sally Gooze, Pam Thomas, and Maggie Gillikin tackled the job of library inventory. We now have a complete list of our library contents, which will be available to all members. We are very fortunate to have such a complete library, at each meeting, ready for our perusal. Although most members were very conscientious and returned all materials in time for the inventory, some are still outstanding and must be returned. Following is a list of these titles. Please check your bedside stacks and bring these items to the next meeting, or contact Maggie if you have any questions. Call For Entries As a special project, the Washington Calligraphers Guild plans to publish a perpetual calendar containing a collection of “thoughts for the day.” There will be one page for each of the 365 days of the year. There is no specific theme. We are seeking a selection of serious and humorous, thought-provoking sayings or aphorisms. If you know the author of your quote, please give credit, and be sure it is copyright free. We invite and encourage ALL calligraphers to participate. Entries must be received no later than march 15, 2002. Up to five quotes may be submitted. In the event that more than the required number of contributions is received, the calendar committee will make final selections. Please do not confuse this calendar with the annual Calligrapher’s’ Engagement Calendar. The calendar will measure 4 ¼ x 5 ½ inches. Maximum artwork area is 2 ¾ x 4 inches – horizontal layout. Must be camera ready, black ink on white paper, reduced if necessary. Entries cannot be returned. Contact Shelly Freishtat, 301-424-8969 with questions. Do not put your name on front. Print name, address, email address on separate piece of paper and attach to the back of each piece. Mail with stiff cardboard to Shelly Freishtat, 12837 Lamp Post Lane, Potomac, MD 20854. |

Stamps ~ stamps ~ stamps As calligraphers, we are always interested in new postal stamps to match our envelope art. The US Postal Service has announced some new stamps for the coming year. These include a block of Winter Olympic Games stamps to showcase the Salt lake city games in 2002, a 2002 Lunar New year’s Stamp depicting the Year of the Horse, and a February Black History Month stamp honoring Langston Hughes, a noted 20th century writer. March will feature the US Military Academy at West Point and a Happy Birthday stamp. In April there will be a pane of 50 stamps titled “Greeting From America,” depicting each state’s bird, flower, tree, capital city and date of statehood. There will also be a continuation of the Nature of America series with a pane of 10 stamps illustrating the Longleaf Pine Forest. May will feature Irving Berlin, and June will honor John James Audubon with a reprint of his Birds of America. There will also be a set of 20 stamps featuring photos of America’s most influential photographers. Current US stamps and a free catalog are available if you call 1-800-STAMP-24, or on the web at www.usps.com . A good place in town to see all stamps and purchase without waiting in line is at the Alamo Heights Post Office next to HEB Central Market on Broadway. |

BOOK REVIEW "Making & Keeping Creative Journals "by Suzanne Tourtillott is just out and features some of the work of our own Wendy Davis in Austin. This is a book about making our own books with our own art and our own words. The illustrations are magnificent, and the step-by-step instructions are quite clear. The author includes suggestions for a travel journal, a dream journal, a poet’s journal, a grandmother’s journal, a sculpture journal, a child’s summer journal, and many others. Each is unique and some of the structures are intriguing. We calligraphers are often quoting other people’s words. This book is an encouraging nudge toward making art of our own words and images. It’s a great companion to the March program on Writing from Within with Marylin Croman. Making & Keeping Creative Journals, Suzanne Tourtillot, editor, Lark Books, 2001. Available through Borders and other local book stores. |

Class News Maggie Gillikin will resume her bookmaking classes on Saturday, February 16, 2002, at Discovery School, from 1-5 PM. Class fee is $25. Call Maggie at 494-4613 to register.Mary Bowman will be teaching sumi-e painting again. She has openings on the first and last Fridays of January and February and the first Friday in March. Contact Mary to register. The Reggie Class met early in January to discuss formation of a study group for the purpose of maintaining skills learned last year. Participation will be limited to class members for the first 6-12 months, in order to allow the group to “get it’s act together.” This is planned as a show, share, and critique time, not a working. Hopefully at the end of the first 6-12 months, the group will be organized enough to then invite the rest of the guild members to take part. |
Photos on the Web If you
have access to the Internet, go to the Flourishes
website and admire the photos of Susan Oaks textile
vessels. If you missed the November meeting, this will
give you a chance to see a sample of Oaks' artistry in a
couple of her pieces. *** |
