Flourishes - Volume XXI * February 1999

Lines by Leslie
Hi, Everybody,

Welcome to 1999! We've had our first meeting of the year and we're off to a great start. Thank you to Loni and the Hospitality Committee for the delicious refreshments and to all who attended the meeting so soon after the holidays. We had terrific attendance, and that always makes the meetings so much fun.

Thank you to Maggie for a very informative Early Bird on variations in letterforms, and for the program on silk painting. What fun! Now there's another whole art form we're all excited about. The hands-on programs seem to be our most popular, so we all need to be thinking about potential programs for the coming year.

And, of course, thank you again and again and again to Darla for a great job on the newsletter, and to Bonnie for our beautiful and creative covers. I'm very pleased to report that both volunteered - honest, I didn't twist any arms at all - to do this job again next year. The Guild is very grateful to you both.

Our membership voted and we now have a theme for our Spring Exhibit, "Feelings." This title is intended to include the entire range of emotions, both pleasant and not so pleasant. It gives us a tremendous freedom in our choice of pieces, and we have lots of time between now and April 30th, our turn in date. So, let's all get busy and make stuff, as they say. Our holiday party exhibit was just a small taste of the talent in our Guild. Let's put on our best show ever for our last major exhibit of the century, the millennium, and all that jazz!

Thank you so much to Hazel once again for doing such a wonderful job on this year's calendar, and for providing the prizes for the three top salespersons. And, congratulations to our winners. Remember that Pauline is ready for next year's calendar committee to go to work now, so that we can be ready for the next project.

Joannie and I will be going to the Southwest Conference in Tulsa at the end of January. If anyone has anything for us to report or any question for us to ask, please let us know. We're excited about this opportunity to exchange ideas with the other Guilds in the conference, and we'll report on the meeting at the February meeting. As Joannie announced, we are planning and hoping to have Reggie Ezell's yearlong program for the year 2001. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn from one of the country's best teachers. We have lots of time to prepare ourselves in every way. Joannie will be showing his video at the Early Bird time the next month, so please plan to come see it if you can manage to arrive by 6:30. If you miss it and would like to see it, we'll be sure to show it again so that all who are interested will have a chance to find out about his course. All who have taken it give it rave reviews, including Francene Smith, who says we can't afford to miss this opportunity. This is something for us to be looking forward to.

Just a reminder: At each meeting, there are flyers and notices posted on the bulletin board. I realize everyone is busy and needs time to socialize. But I feel as if some excellent information may be missed simply due to people forgetting to look. So please try to remember to take a few minutes at each meeting to review the information posted. We try to get it all into the newsletter as well, but it's good for us all to be in the habit of checking the board at each meeting.

I'll see you all in February.

February Early Bird

Early birds will get to view the Reggie Ezell video. See you at 6:30.

Program

Helen Rasplicka will lead our hands-on program "Masks, in Letters and Words." Helen says we will use Rudy's card stock - so no need to bring paper. But do bring: scissors, Marvy marker 2.0 or Kuretake duo 2.0 & 3.5, and a LePen (all in your choice of colors) keeping in mind a Mardi Gras theme! You might want to bring a glue stick and anything else laying around your studio that can be attached easily for contrast.

MINI-WORKSHOP

Bonnie Houser presents

Walnut Ink, the Before & After it All

Thursday, February 18
7:00 p.m.
Warm Springs Rehabilitation Hospital
5101 Medical Drive

February promises to be a fun time with Bonnie Houser's mini on walnut ink. A few things that will make for a smoother, more productive time involves a little preparation before the workshop.

Please bring a 90 lb. hot press paper divided into fourths on which you have prepared an underpainting of any of the following:

Crayola background
Watercolor background
Acrylic/Golden background (maybe some of the paper you completed in Rosemarie's mini in November.)
Any other creative background.

At the February guild meeting, Bonnie will provide each participant with a canister of the walnut ink with instructions on how to mix it in three different strengths. The ink needs to be pre-mixed before coming to the mini. If you cannot make it to the February guild meeting, contact Bonnie to make arrangements for picking up your walnut ink. She will also bring the supply list required for the mini to the February guild meeting. We look forward to some more mini fun. She will also have 90 lb. paper available at the meeting for $2.

Alphabetically Speaking
Via e-mail from Pavasa

Peter Thornton's new book "Alphabetically Speaking" is finally available. Anyone familiar with Peter's work or teaching will know the kind of quality to be expected from him and this book is certainly not a disappointment. The book is about "Contrast" using good quality reproductions of Peter's own work. This book is really inspiring!

"Alphabetically Speaking" - a review by Stephen Sanders

"Contrasts" was the theme chosen by Peter Thornton for the exhibition held to celebrate 30 consecutive years of teaching in the U.S. The 36-page book, printed in high quality, full-color throughout is essentially a photographic record of this achievement.

Peter uses contrast to exploit the alphabet's infinite variety of combinations from the calm and conventional to the wild and exciting. Each illustration is accompanied by a succinct analysis which gives an insight into how and why (and, in some cases, why not) the pieces work, which draws on Peter's experience both as a teacher and craftsman. The book, which conveys the author's/scribe's love and enthusiasm for letters, combines the visual appeal of the piece with clear and lucid explanations which will appeal to students and practitioners alike.

Presently available only from Peter. His address is:

Mr. Peter Thornton
68 Chesterfield Road
Lichfield
Staffordshire
WS13 6QW
England

Price for the book is $25, plus $3 (P&H) (U.S.) If you purchase 5 books or more, the postage and handling is free. Please mark envelopes "Book" and make cheques payable to P. Thornton. It may be helpful if you enclose a self-addressed sticky label, too.
