| Our February Major Workshop is one
we've all been looking forward to. This is the
workshop we are treating ourselves to with the profits
from the 26 Letter Poster and Book Project. Melissa Dinwiddie started making art and letters in 1995 as a way to procrastinate from what she was supposed to be doing at the time. Some five years later she now works full time as a freelance artist, designer, and itinerant teacher, and has found other ways to procrastinate. Melissa's commercial work runs the gamut from illuminated manuscripts to corporate identity and web design. Her original calligraphic works and artists' books have been exhibited both locally and nationally, garnering a number of honors and awards. A former faculty member at the Palo Alto Art Center, Melissa has taught for calligraphy and book arts guilds around the US, as well as in periodic private classes and workshops out of her home studio. In 1999 she was on faculty at Writing Beyond Words, the annual calligraphy conference in Connecticut. She is the author of a how-to article about her popular star tunnel books, which can be found in the 2nd issue of Tabellae Ansata. Melissa served three years as Workshop Chair for Pacific Scribes in Santa Clara, CA, and two years on the Friends of Calligraphy Council in San Francisco. She lives with her cat in Palo Alto, and keeps sane by salsa dancing several nights a week. Rudolph Koch's Neuland typeface, with its heavy weight and jaunty feel, has inspired numerous calligraphic interpretations. In this class we'll learn a particularly accessible pen-made version that still retains (and maybe even surpasses) all of the character and dynamic energy of the original typeface. Something for everyone: Even the beginning students comeup with great results after only one day with these letters, while more experienced calligraphers will find this alphabet an excellent way to practice their pen manipulation skills. Melissa will also present a slide show on Friday evening, February 9, 7 PM, entitled "From Chaos to Creation: The Making of a Commissioned Piece." Melissa says she will share her process in a photographic documentary of the making of a full scale commissioned piece, from initial contact with the client, to the first glimmerings of a design concept, through to the finished work. Along the way, she will share tips and techniques for working and dealing with clients. Come be a fly on her studio wall! This presentation and reception will take place at the home of Leslie Winakur. It promises to be a very special evening. Workshop Fee: $25 (2 days) Supply List: to be announced Reception and Slide Show: open to all members, no charge |
