Happy Holidays to All!!  Happy New Year!!

What a busy, fun packed year we've had!  We had major workshops, great programs, exciting mini-whorkshops, a year long course with Reggie Ezell (can't quite believe that it's over already) a gorgeous sold-out calendar, a renewed set of Saturday Specials - WOW!! *** Thanks go to each and every one of us as Guild members who gave our dues, our creative thoughts, our sweat, and our attendance to the wide array of events available this past year.
We had a full Saturday Special on 1 Dec - I had a great time and now we know that our wonderful meeting room accommodates a LARGE number of people and stuff!! I can't wait for an opportunity to teach with Joan Schmitz -- that Saturday Special is scheduled for 12 January 2002 -- sign up at our January 3rd meeting.  It's gonna be a blast!
Talk about blasts!   Our Holiday Party at Leslie Winakur's house was so exciting!  The food was outstanding (some recipes will be posted, I hope) the card/bookmark exchange was super, and a ton of really neat things were gathered for the Battered Women's Shelter, which will be delivered by Janice Anabtawi -- Thanks, Janice! And lots of spouses attended -- the very best part was being together.  Our thoughts and prayers are with Denise Adler and Priscilla Earl, both of whom are undergoing medical testing.
Just as all of you have made this year of our Guild look so good, we collectively make our country look good in a year of difficult challenges.  I am so glad that one of the very first events of the year 2002 for me will be our meeting on January 3rd.  See you there!

Maggie

REMINDER !! REMINDER !!

Our Annual Spring Exhibit is approaching in April. This is one of those events that just always seems to sneak up on us at the last minute. So this year let’s try to sneak up on it instead. Go to your studio and make stuff, as the poster says. As of this mailing, we have 3 months to get ready. That should be enough time for us to completely fill the gallery with wonderful art. Be sure to review the guidelines in the directory and in the November issue of Flourishes. If you have any questions, please call Jo Pacelli, Exhibit Chairperson.

BEST WISHES FOR A SPEEDY RECOVERY to our ailing members, who include Rudy Gonzales, Priscilla Earl, and Denise Adler. We hope each of you is doing well.

CALLING   ALL   RULERS

Have you ever needed to draw lines on your paper quickly? Have you needed to center a line of lettering? Do you need to cut a straight line? Do you want to have an even slant to your lettering? Don’t you just detest the tedious job of lining and cutting accurately? For our January Early Bird Special, Leslie Winakur, who hates having to draw lines but loves the look you get when you do it right, will discuss the use of various ruling devices. There will be a demonstration of the use of Reggie’s Linex Liner, the centering ruler, metal rulers, plastic rulers, Marsha Brady’s Schaedler Precision Rule, and several other odd ruling instruments I have wasted money on in the past!

INTELLECTUAL  PROPERTY  for  CALLIGRAPHERS

Did you ever realize that you are a person with intellectual property? Do you know what intellectual property means? Do you know the value of intellectual property for yourself, your family? Do you know the difference between a utility patent, a design patent, a trademark, service mark or copyright? Do you know how to protect your intellectual property? If you’ve ever asked yourself any of the questions above, or are curious about them, join us at the January meeting for a program about intellectual property from a calligrapher’s point of view., when Linda Browning and Alan Thiele , two attorneys with the local law firm of Jenkens & Gilchrist, present the program .

Linda W. Browning was licensed to practice before the United States patent and Trademark office last year. She received her JD from St. Mary’s in 2000 and her BA in Biology, BSN in Nursing, and MBA in Management and Finance from the U. of Texas in Austin. Linda is a registered nurse and mother of two. She enjoys watercolor, drawing and painting to relax and does her own floral arrangements. Linda started out as a music major in voice, and also plays the piano and guitar. As you can see she is a very diverse individual.

Alan R. Thiele has been a practicing patent attorney for twenty years. He began as an engineer after graduating from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA. Alan flew for a year in Viet Nam as a helicopter test pilot. He is the author of several books, and is currently working on another. He believes in writing for at least twenty minutes each day. He is an extremely organized person who is meticulous in his record keeping, as evidenced by his journals. A father of six, he enjoys motor cycle riding, working out, collecting pens and reading. He also writes with a very distinctive hand.
