January Activities

Early Bird

with Bonnie Houser
Remember the gorgeous June 2000 newsletter cover? You won't want to miss watching Bonnie Houser paint Tyvek paper. Tyvek is that industrial insulation paper which is also used by the post office for indestructivle envelopes. Amazingly, it takes paint happily and provides a lovely textures look. Bonnie has 12 color formulas which she has created and which she will share with us.

Show and Tell
Please bring your cards and bookmarks from the holiday party exchange so that all may see and enjoy them.

Program

Bosworth Paper Company
, located on Bitters near Broadway, is coming to our January meeting with bags of paper sample booklets for each member of our guild.  Phyllis, the manager of this firm, will answer questions about
papers carried in stock.  She will also bring some special paper packets to sell during the early bird and after her presentation.  Finally,  take this post-holiday treat and join the hands-on portion of the program by testing out a wide variety of inks and gouaches on your paper samples.  Let's enjoy the fun as we explore a new source of machine and handmade papers in San Antonio.

Melissa Dinwiddie Workshop
New World Neuland
Feb 10-11, repeated on Feb 12-13

Our February Major Workshop is one we've all been looking forward to.  This is the workshop we are treating ourselves to with the profits from the 26 Letter Poster and Book Project.

Melissa Dinwiddie started making art and letters in 1995 as a way to procrastinate from what she was supposed to be doing at the time.  Some five years later she now works full time as a freelance artist, designer, and itinerant teacher, and has found other ways to procrastinate.

Melissa's commercial work runs the gamut from illuminated manuscripts to corporate identity and web design.  Her original calligraphic works and artists' books have been exhibited both locally and nationally, garnering a number of honors and awards.

A former faculty member at the Palo Alto Art Center, Melissa has taught for calligraphy and book arts guilds around the US, as well as in periodic private classes and
workshops out of her home studio.  In 1999 she was on faculty at Writing Beyond Words, the annual calligraphy conference in Connecticut.  She is the author of a how-to article about her popular star tunnel books, which can be found in the 2nd issue of Tabellae Ansata

Melissa served three years as Workshop Chair for Pacific Scribes in Santa Clara, CA, and two years on the Friends of Calligraphy Council in San Francisco.  She lives with her cat in Palo Alto, and keeps sane by salsa dancing several nights a week.

Rudolph Koch's Neuland typeface, with its heavy weight and jaunty feel, has inspired numerous calligraphic interpretations.  In this class we'll learn a particularly accessible pen-made version that still retains (and maybe even surpasses) all of the character and dynamic energy of the original typeface.  Something for everyone:  Even the beginning students come
up with great results after only one day with these letters, while more experienced calligraphers will find this alphabet an excellent way to practice their pen manipulation skills.

Melissa will also present a slide show on Friday evening, February 9, 7 PM, entitled
"From Chaos to Creation:  The Making of a Commissioned Piece."  Melissa says she will share her process in a photographic documentary of the making of a full scale commissioned piece, from initial contact with the client, to the first glimmerings of a design concept, through to the finished work.  Along the way, she will share tips and techniques for working and dealing with clients.  Come be a fly on her studio wall!  This presentation and reception will take place at the home of Leslie Winakur.  It promises to be a very special evening.

Workshop Fee:  $25 (2 days)
Supply List: to be announced

Reception and Slide Show: open to all members, no charge

A Special Message
I just want to extend a heartfelt  thanks to everyone in the Guild who attended Pat's service, sent cards and e-mails, brought food, and especially for all of your prayers.  I really do appreciate your friendship and support.  You are such a special group.  Thanks a million.
Love,  Darla
