MMO What an exciting year we've had! First of all, I want to thank all of you for allowing me to serve as President for a second year. So far it's been the easiest task imaginable -- the jobs that all of you have volunteered to do -- and have done so well -- make our Guild so vibrant ... far flung members travel for well over an hour each way twice a month to be with us for meetings and minis -- that's gratifying to all of us in S.A. We're filling all our workshops -- every ones that have gone back to back like Melissa Dinwiddie and Niki Bonnett -- our curiosity and creativity are high and hopefully we'll keep nurturing all our diverse calligraphic interests. While most committee chairmen have graciously agreed to continue next year, they can always use another pair of willing hands -- so think of your own interest area and volunteer -- it's the very best way to enjoy great friendships in this Guild. Those honored Paul Freeman nominees have really volunteered and then some! Congrats to Jill Adams, Sally Gooze, and Karen Veni for attaining the Freeman Award paintings for this year. A huge thank you to Shirley Ginn for providing the Paul Freeman Nominee scroll -- carrying all the names of former Paul Freeman nominees. She also provided a history of the Award and of Paul Freeman's life, which were neat! Also, thanks to Shirley Ginn, we have a one page information sheet about our Guild, complete with maps of our meeting and workshop sites ... a great idea! Every new member will get one in a packet when joining the Guild -- and our instructors can circulate them, too. Denise Adler has provided the outer design for those new members packets. Pauline Sager has organized a full palette of Saturday Special Workshops -- the first one on June 16th -- so be sure to call her and sign up for those fun-packed, inexpensive workshops -- this first one will feature paste paper, as per the most popular request from our recent survey. So -Sign-up, guys!!! The program this month was a super Round Robin of ideas for transfers of all kinds -- and Frank Rippel also provided as door prizes 2 T-Shirt transfers of our 26 Letters Project. Such cool stuff! And what a wealth of neat door prizes -- thanks to all who contributed!!... Secret Pals were assigned by Francene Smith and her committee, and our summer fun project is under way. Remember to send lots to your secret pal -- all will be revealed in September! Our June Pot Luck Party will be at B.J. Grant's new home 9I heard it's more like a castle - can't wait for a tour at 6:30 P.M. on 7 June) be sure to bring food and a party mood! Over the summer, don't forget our Exchange on the first Thursday in August at 7 P.M.! It's a great event -- if you want to rent a table for selling goodies related to Calligraphic Arts, call me -- they'er $10/table - (people can share table) all the art stores will be there, and all our Guild friends! Be there or be square! (Boy! Does that date me, or what? Duh...) In the meantime, Leslie Winakur will unlock the mysteries of the Ruling Pen at our Mini-Workshop on 17 May at 7 P.M. See you there! The slate presented by the Nominating Committee was unanimously accepted by the general membership at the May meeting. Our executive board for the 2001-2002 year is as follows: Pres. – Maggie Gillikin Thank you and congratulations to all! Installation of officers will take place at the potluck dinner. Paul Freeman Awards were presented at the May meeting. Congratulations to all of our nominees, and especially to our winners, Jill Adams, Sally Gooze, and Karen Veni. We are all so grateful to have so many active members contributing to our guild. Shirley Ginn made this a very meaningful presentation this year, with a history of Paul Freeman courtesy of Eleanor Russell, a little story told by Paul Freeman courtesy of Pauline Sager, and with a gorgeous scroll listing all of the Paul Freeman Award nominees to date. The scroll was created by Shirley and lettered by Sally Gooze. These additions made the award night an even more special event. Thank you to Maggie Gillikin and Leslie Winakur for the nomination certificates, which have little bits of silver on them this year, in honor of our 25th anniversary. And thanks to Beverly Carter going through all the old newsletters to find the names of the past nominees . Thanks so much to the Door Prize Committee and all of those who contributed the wonderful things presented in May. A very special thank you to Frank Rippel for creating our CD and T-shirt transfer from the 26 Letter Poster. We had a fascinating program in May and learned all about different transfer techniques. Thank you to Frank Rippel for the fabric images via the computer, Beverly Carter, Francene Smith, and Camille Storment for the Gocco demonstrations, Karen Veni for the xylene and acetone transfers, and Melanie Capps for the rubbing techniques. Darla Peek tells us that Calendar 2002 is on the way to becoming something special. All of the art work has been turned in, and now the committee can get to work creating a great calendar. We had delicious refreshments at the May meeting, thanks to Beverly Carter, Sandra Reyna, Wendy Davis, and Mavis Caudill. If you have not yet signed up for next year, please contact Janice Anabtawi. A reminder: please bring only finger foods for meetings and save the extra special stuff for the potluck dinners. |

Secret Pals Calligraphers Exchange Saturday Specials The Saturday Special Workshops are back by popular demand. Pauline Sager and Shirley Ginn are co-chairing this committee. These one day workshops will be conducted by a guild member or a local instructor, at various times throughout the year as our schedule permits. Kicking off its return will be the most requested subject: Paste Paper, taught by Pauline Sager. Paste paper is an ancient craft, a form of decorating paper used prior to the invention of marbling. Like marbled paper, the paste paper can be used for a variety of home and art decorating projects. For the calligrapher and bookbinder, the decorated papers are used as a background for text, and for book covers, end sheets, collage, and note cards. It’s like finger painting for adults, and it’s easy to make pleasing images with little skill. Pigments are added to a paste and using various tools, one or more colors of paste are moved around on wet paper to make patterns or color combinations. So, sign up with Pauline by June 9 for the workshop on June 16, 2001, 10 AM– 4:30 PM, at Christ Episcopal Church, Family Ministry Center. Members $20, non-members $30. Make check payable to SACG and mail with SASE to Pauline Sager, 2407 Shadow Cliff, SAT 78232. Pauline will send you the minimal supply list when you sign up. The next Saturday Special will be January 12, 2002,
when Joan Schmitz will teach Carolingian, so save the date. International Calligraphy Conference
Lazy Days of Summer Summer is a good time to practice. Make some cards to use later in the year. To dress up a card, add some collage, a small drawing, some color, some gold, try a new letter form, repeat a letter(s) or word to make a border, etc. Or browse the web: www.cnyscribe.com www.cecilia-letteringart.com , www.writeoncalligraphershomestead.com . Have fun!!! |

WORKSHOP NEWS Excellent news from Timothy Botts. He is willing to teach for 2 days, which means we can repeat the workshop and will have room for a total of 50 people. We are still uncertain about what he will teach, but no one seems to care! Tim will be here to present the program at the meeting on Thursday, October 4, 2001. He will then teach a one-day workshop on Friday, October 5, and this will be repeated on Saturday, October 6. The workshop fee is $50. Jill Adams is now taking money for this great bargain. Jacqueline Sullivan will be teaching Calligraphic Collage on February 9-10, 2002. She does BEAUTIFUL work and we’re very happy to be planning to work with her. She will teach various methods of creating backgrounds, including watercolor experimentation, acrylic media, and metallic powders. These backgrounds will be integrated with letter arts or can be used for other forms of art work. More details will follow in the fall. And save the date for Carol Pallesen’s Modern Day Book of Hours workshop on April 6-7, 2002, and for Marsha Brady’s collage book and foundational alphabet the first weekend of September, October, and November, 2002. |

What does a Xyron™
do? Come to a project class and find out first hand. You don’t have to
own a machine – EVERYTHING is provided. We make FIVE new projects in
each class. You’ll do laminating, adhesives on paper and fabric, make
a magnet and one more project just for fun. I use all three machines:
The Xyron 850, the 500, and the new 510 – all with no heat, no
batteries, and no electricity — magic? You decide. |
