MMO For so many things -- how can I begin to thank all of you enough for making these two years so pleasurable for me as President ?!! All our meetings, programs, exhibits, workshops, fundraisers and just times shared together have been just great. Congratulations to Joan Schmitz and Shirley Ginn as our Paul Freeman Award recipients for 2002. What a stellar group of nominees -- And when Joan did the program -- THE RETROSPECTIVE -- Joannie! I had no idea that you were a stand-up comedienne in your spare time! IT was a sparkling finish to a quality year. Congratulations
are also in order to our newly elected Officers: As we look forward and create gifts for Secret Pals, prepare for our newest fundraiser, compile our Directories and sew them, present our new Calendar, and share time together -- amid all these exciting activities, we shall also be experiencing the saddest event this Guild can feel -- the death, an untimely one, of our long standing member, Denise Adler. Our deepest sympathy goes to Larry, her husband; her parents, and her sister. She will be so very missed by all of us. Thank you to everyone who was able to sign the book that we passed around at Thursday night's meeting. She saw it the very next day, thanks to Camille Storment. Our thanks to Camille and to Shirley Ginn for being there for all of us last Friday at the Hospital. It's not when all these good times roll, but when really tough things happen that the solid friendships in this Guild sustain us... Thank you all for that great gift. For the record: Bruce Gillikin would like everyone to know, even though no one has ever asked us, that he named Maggie’s column MMO, and it stands for “Maggie Mouths Off.” Maggie |

In Memoriam August 11, 1951 - May 4, 2002 We are all saddened by
the loss of our dear friend Denise. She will be sorely missed. Here are some recollections from a few members who were close to her. Memories are the gratitude of the heart. Camille Storment: Denise’s long time crafting buddy, recalls the fun they had working on their projects. They especially enjoyed putting together the June, 2000, newsletter cover, a collage with a Paris theme that Denise designed based on her own trip to Paris. Camille would like the guild members to know how much pleasure and comfort Denise derived from the many cards, handmade books, and other gifts, visits and calls she received. These expressions of love and concern helped sustain Denise throughout her illness and were appreciated more than words can say. Shirley Ginn writes: The summer of 2000 was a fishy experience for me. Fish began arriving in Maya and continued swimming my way up to the night of the revealing of Secret Pals. Of course, that night I got the biggest fish of all - an autograph fish which was signed by most of those present at the September, 2000, meeting. This fish now resides in my studio and I have a precious memory of a wonderful and talented lady, Denise Adler. Denise was not only my Secret Pal, showering me with fish that did not smell, but also showering me with her smile and love. She became a precious friend, one I will always treasure. We laughed together, cried together and prayed together. I will miss her so , but I know that I have a new angel watching over me. I was truly blessed to see Denise on Friday, May 3. As the nurses were preparing her for a surgical procedure, we had a chance to have that one last visit. Being typical Denise, she was more worried about me and the difficulty I was having seeing a precious friend going through so much, than about worrying what the procedure would bring her. It was so easy for me to tell her that I loved her. It was something that we said to each other often, sometimes several times during a visit in person or on the phone. Denise was everything that a person could ever want: a true friend, someone who loved you even when they knew the uglies about you. Her face always had a smile on it; there was a gentle and special touch that was only hers and the words that came from her mouth were spoken from the heart and with such kindness and love that you knew that you had been touched by an angel. We were all blessed to have Denise in our lives. Treasure your memories of her and know that she will be watching over us from above as we stumble through this world without her. I hope that each one of us will try to be just a little bit like her - a caring, loving individual. Maybe if we all do this, we can make a difference. Francene Smith writes: It was with great sadness that I learned of the passing of Denise Adler, but remember well her celebration of life. As she generously shared her knowledge and Xyron supplies with us monthly in Seguin, her prophetic words were, “ I have been blessed with more than lifetime supply, so it gives me joy in sharing.” My personal feelings are summed up in the following poem that Carlos Haun submitted to the Heart of Texas Stampers in memory of Denise. In the rising sun, and
in its going down, |

The Calligrapher in Our Time We don’t create heroic things to earn fame. We put no scratches on the globe, but perhaps with our gentle art we add a few little dabs of joy to life, in a nicely written praise of the Lord, written with the complete engagement of our heart. Calligraphy is a peaceful and noble art, done by well educated human beings who do their work with full commitment, with intense concentration. For we want to put into our letters a little of our own feelings, of our personality and mood. Letters should have grace and beauty in themselves. No calligrapher pollutes rivers with his ink, or poisons the air we breathe. Calligraphy makes no noise. We don’t fight with arms nor with our pens, but we want to convince sometimes with a hand-lettered message of special importance in which we believe. Of course we know we are not the center of the world—we merely like to make nice things with our given talent. And we have a burden of responsibility: the heritage of the great masters of the past, the tradition of the scribes of the Middle ages, of the royal and imperial ancestors in Europe and Asia. Calligraphy is still a royal activity. Thank you to Joan Schmitz and to the Washington Calligraphers Guild for sharing these words of wisdom from the insightful Hermann Zapf, one of the fathers of modern calligraphic arts. |
