Everyone.

February's meeting was well attended and we all had a great time. We took care of some important business involving the Paul Freeman Awards. The membership voted that all members should be allowed to nominate candidates for the awards. Nominations should be in writing and that the nomination should include a brief statement of why that person is nominated. Also, if the nominee has received the award in the past, the nomination should mention the recent reasons that person is nominated. All nominations will be made in writing and sent to the committee chair (Laura Heye this year), she/he will list them in the newsletter, and then we will vote at the following meeting. This will become our standing rule regarding these nominations, so that we will not have to reinvent the process each year. We have a lot of deserving members who have worked hard for the Guild this year, so be sure to get your nominations in as soon as possible. Maggie and I will happily provide certificates similar to the ones we made last year, so that each nominee will have a certificate of nomination as a reminder of the Guild's appreciation.

And speaking of nominations, it's that time of the year again. We have formed a nominating committee that will meet in the near future and then present us with a slate of officers for our approval. This means that it's time to start thinking about jobs for the coming year. This is a very important consideration for all of us. I know I've repeated this over and over, but I cannot stress the idea enough: in order for us each to feel as if this is our own Guild, we each need to take part. It's true that attendance at meetings and paying dues is definitely taking part. However, we need people to do the work that keeps the Guild going, and it is unfair to expect the same people to do those jobs each year. It is also unfair to expect the committee chairperson to be the committee. So, with all that said, I would like to thank our current officers and committee chairs for a wonderful year so far, and I would like to encourage, cajole, and beg everyone else to please, please consider volunteering for a job this coming year. None of our jobs are too difficult with the assistance of a friend. None of the committee chairs is too big a job if there is really a committee to chair. So let me know what you might consider doing for our Guild over the next month or two. All contributions of time and effort are greatly appreciated!

Our calendar is almost sold out, so we made the right decision to print fewer this year than in the past few years. We're in the black, and that makes it even nicer.

Joan and I showed off our calendar at the Southwest Calligraphers Conference in Fort Worth a few weeks ago, and it was so well received that we sold 9 more calendars there!

Thank you once again to our Hospitality Committee. This was an especially pretty spread for Valentine's.

And thank you to Mary Bowman and the Gorups for a wonderful Early Bird demonstration of Japanese calligraphy. It was such a pleasure to watch that graceful movement of the brush.

Thank you also to Kate Bergquist for a lovely program on hearts, flowers, and decorated letters. Kate, you make it look so easy! Now we can all go home and practice till Valentine's Day.

Our Twenty-Six Letters project is coming along beautifully. We should all be proud of the people who put that together and are making it all happen. We can hardly wait to see the final results. Meanwhile, we all need to be busy preparing our pieces for the Spring Exhibit, for which the theme is "Twenty-Six Letters!" The turn in date is coming up soon and we want to have a good showing. I look forward to seeing you all at the March meeting.

Early Bird

Arrive early (6:30 p.m.) for the Early Bird demonstration on "Calligraphy Beyond the Traditional Paper Surfaces." What does Maggie have in store for us this time? Come and find out, Early Birds are always interesting.

March Program

"Beyond the Nib"

The March program is another fun round robin where you can experiment with writing tools and ink. No Speedball, Mitchell, or Brause nibs this evening! Come prepared to circulate through five stations writing on paper with non- traditional instruments such as twigs, tongue depressors, reeds, and other cleverly constructed writing tools. If you have any such instruments at your home, please bring them to share at a station. Plenty of paper will be available.

All we need is creative minds and kindred calligraphic spirits! This will be another delightful guild meeting to be sure.

Sally Gooze

Valentine Card Exchange was a great opportunity to practice our creativity and our calligraphy; lots of beautiful cards were exchanged. The patients at Warm Springs also benefited. We created 90 handmade valentines for them to enjoy and make their holiday in the hospital just a little brighter. All cards were appreciated. SWAK

Thinking of Members

Our condolences go to Betty Lou Jordan on the recent loss of her brother and to Carol Patterson on the loss of her father. Our heartfelt sympathy goes to both of these members. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Special prayers and wishes for a speedy recovery go to Rod Smith's wife, Beeper, and to Sister Nicholas. Sister is recovering from by-pass surgery.

Please remember and pray for Patty Gaskins' son, Paul. Some of you may remember Patty; she is a former, very active Guild member. Her son Paul was in a serious car accident in January, as of the February meeting he was still in a coma at University Hospital. Write to Patty at home. She can use our support right now.

Congratulations!

Bonnie Houser and her family won an award in Austin recently for an entry from their Dry Comal Creek Vineyard. You can visit their vineyard for a wine tasting and free tour Wednesday through Sunday, from Noon to 5 p.m. The vineyard is located at 1741 Herbelin Road in New Braunfels, TX. Herbelin Road is off Highway 46 between Highway 281 and IH 35. For directions, call 830/885- 4121.

Maggie Gillikin's Next Workshop
"COLOR"
is NOW scheduled for
Sat., & Sun., April 29th and 30th
Location to be Announced

Due to the opening of our Spring exhibit, Maggie has moved her next workshop to the last weekend in April. Mark your calendar for April 29th and 30th and make plans to attend another magical workshop with Maggie. She will have all the details for us in the April issue of Flourishes.

We heard great things about Maggie's last workshop (see Shirley Ginn's rave review below: (Workshop Review/Suggestion) and we saw wonderful examples of color, creativity and melted letterforms at our February meeting.

Maggie makes the cost affordable, generously donates the revenue to the Reggie fund, and shares her vast knowledge and talent with SACG! We're anticipating another magical workshop with Maggie & C-O-L-O-R.

Top Ten Ways You Can Tell You're An Artist

I got this humorous e-mail from a school friend of mine; she doesn't know me well enough to know that a few of these were on target. I don't know the author, but it is definitely someone who hangs out with creatives.

10. Brushes aren't for combing hair or cleaning teeth.
9. People come to you first when pens, pencils and markers disappear.
8. You don't have a bedroom – YOU have a studio.
7. You've named your goldfish after the Group of Seven.
6. You create sculptures with mashed potatoes and peas.
5. You spend more on art supplies than you do for rent.
4. You never wear matching socks.
3. Your fingertips are never flesh colored.
2. You roll out of bed at 12:00 Noon like clockwork,
1. Your wardrobe has become one of your masterpieces.

Paul Freeman Awards

It is time again to nominate Guild members for the Paul Freeman Award. There are two framed pieces by the late calligrapher, Paul Freeman, that are presented each Spring for a year's enjoyment to two SACG members voted by the membership as having contributed and dedicated themselves to the benefit of the Guild in the past year.

The Board made a recommendation to the Guild membership at the February meeting that the nominations for the Paul Freeman Awards should be made by the members of the Guild instead of by past recipients of the award. The membership voted to accept the recommendation.

NOW is the time to make your nomination for this award. Your nomination must be submitted in writing and mailed to: Laura Heye

or via e-mail to: heyehaus@yahoo.com

Deadline for entries is Thursday, February 24th.

Please specify the name of the person you are nominating and the reason you are nominating them. Past recipients are listed in your directory, if you are nominating a past recipient, please tell us what they have done in service for the Guild during the past year.

All the nominees will be listed in the April issue of Flourishes, we will vote on the nominees at the April meeting, and the two awards (the ABCDarium and the New Spencerian) will be presented at the May meeting. All nominees will receive a certificate personally created by Leslie Winakur and Maggie Gillikin.

Mary Bowman's Classes

Mary's two sumi painting winter classes are really filled, but the Friday 1:00 p.m. class in her home has occasional openings. Calligraphers, consult with Mary on your desires for artistic expression in sumi as well as your Friday possibilities. Mary believes that calligraphers learn this technique especially fast. An example of Mary's sumi decorates our page below.

ACA Bulletin 24 January 2000

EDUCATION. We have wonderful news in this New Year and new millennium! The ACA has received the long-awaited funding commitment from the Speedball Arts Products Company of Statesville, North Carolina USA to develop the first phase of an educational curriculum for school aged children. Entitled "Elegant Writing, Calligraphy for the Classroom" the program was inspired by Project Calligraphy, created by the Calligraphers Guild of Jacksonville, Florida USA and will help to foster future generations of calligraphers.

The funding from Speedball will be used to develop the curriculum, instructional materials and exemplars.

EXHIBITIONS. Great things are happening! AlphaMark, the ACA traveling exhibition of artwork by our members, is clearly a success. The exhibition opened in conjunction with the PenUltima '99 conference in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. It was on display at the Etobicoke Civic Centre in Toronto, Canada until February 3, 2000. AlphaMark is a prime example of the ACA fulfilling its mission to its members, the calligraphic community and the general public. Make sure you view AlphaMark at the South Bend Regional Museum of Art in South Bend, Indiana USA from March 5 through April 24, 2000, or order a slide set to show at your next guild meeting (contact Anne Binder at abinder2@michiana.org ). Check the ACA web site or contact ACA Exhibitions Director Linda Renc at therencs@ij.net for the complete AlphaMark schedule. Please note that substantial individual and corporate funding is still needed to support this important endeavor. Let us know if you can provide any assistance in securing funding for AlphaMark.

MEMBERSHIP. Our greatest challenge this year is to increase our membership and improve services to our members, while remaining financially viable. Membership renewals, our primary source of income for ACA programs and activities, are being returned very slowly this year. Much to our dismay, we were forced to delay publication of this issue of The Newsletter until we had sufficient funds to pay for the printing. The Newsletter was delivered to the printer last week and should be in your mailboxes soon.

The ACA exists for the benefit of all of our members, who range from those who love calligraphy as a hobby, to calligraphers working full-time as paid professionals. Help spread the word about ACA activities and encourage all calligraphers to join. Remember that all levels of skill and enthusiasm are welcome! If you have not done so already, renew now. ACA Gift Memberships are available. Any time of year is the right time to give a gift membership in the ACA.

We continue to embrace exciting challenges and opportunities to increase the presence of calligraphy around the world.

With appreciation,
Diane Stum Fekete, President
Association for the Calligraphic Arts

XXIV Letters – Poster Update

The latest on the XXIV Letters poster – it's in the printer's hands. We plan to debut it wrapped around the April issue of Flourishes. It will also be available as a poster and after we wave our magic wand over it a few times, it will reappear in the form of a book. The original artwork will be in the Spring exhibit as well, you will have an opportunity to view them up close.

Thank you to everyone who has been involved with the poster. Our appreciation of calligraphy and our love for letters is very evident – this spirit permeates the color Xerox draft copy. This is an exciting project for SACG!

Workshop Review/Suggestion

Do you want to spend some fun times with friends, old or new? Learn some new techniques? Or re-learn some that you have forgotten? Then mark your calendar for the next workshop given by our very own SACG members.

If you were at the February meeting you saw the display of wonderful projects completed by those that attended Maggie Gillikin's recent major workshop, "Melting Letterforms into Composition." Thirteen of us completed three separate projects during the two-day workshop. Each project was very different, but encouraging and challenging each of us to step out of our comfort zone and to just be creative. There was no right or wrong design or method; everyone was just supposed to put color to paper and then pen to paper. The results were WOW!

Take advantage of the tremendous talent in our Guild and sign up for the next major or mini workshop. We need to draw on our strengths; this will make the cost of a great time and a fabulous workshop affordable for all!

Timothy Botts & The Psalms

In the February issue of Flourishes we mentioned the Timothy Botts exhibit in Santa Ana, CA. Our timing was excellent. A few days later I got an e-mail from Sara Franzen. This is what Sara had to say:

A few days after I received my February issue of Flourishes, it just so happened that I had a trip planned to visit a friend in Orange County. Since Santa Ana is in the same general area, I decided to take a side trip to see the Timothy Botts Exhibit at The Seed Company (which is a ministry of Wycliffe Bible Translators).

The exhibit included 25 pieces (most of them originals) from Botts' collection in his "The Book of Psalms". When Timothy Botts was the instructor of the first weekend workshop I ever took, what struck me most about his calligraphic skill was his ability to use color to express emotion.

This very ability struck me again when I viewed the exhibit. Mr. Botts has the unique gift of creating visual images that please the eye and touch the heart. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience! Sara Franzen

Thank you very much for your review. We're fortunate to have a Guild member in California who could view the exhibit in person and give us a special report!
