MMO

I know that January has 31 days, but it went by =FAST=! The Reggie class will do that to you! I did reflect on the fact that even a couple of years ago, the Reggie Class was a dream wish -- now a reality for 20 lucky ones of us -- and it is due to the overwhelming support and vitality of our whole membership that allowed this to happen.  And because all of us "play well with others" any tidbits even during this year will begin to be shared with those who are not in the course... even as we struggle on those long Saturday classes, we are wearing smiles -- we'll keep you posted on progress!

Our mini-workshops are so wonderful -- another chance for high-grade play!   Thanks to all who turned out in that miserable weather to make 2 fun books!  I can hardly wait for Beverly Carter's Quilling class of 15 February.

All our 26 letter poster books and slipcases are gone -- as well as the 10 artist proofs of that limited edition! W.O.W!!  They sold in about 30 minutes (over the lunchtime break) at the Southwest Conference.  All the other Guilds were blown away by our project -- pat yourself on the back right now!!  Read more about this in my S.W. Conference highlights, (is in this newsletter). (You can also gift yourself with 2 days of Dinwiddie!)

Our nominating committee is in place -- Jill Adams, Bonnie Houser, & Pam Thomas -- if you have suggestions or would like to volunteer for an office or committee chair, please contact them -- they will have lots of news for us next month!  Stay tuned...

Be working on exhibition pieces - turn in is 2 April 2001 -- it's our 25th anniversary, so let's have a huge turnout!  "Silver Celebration" is the theme!

It was decided at our meeting on 1 Feb that we would not donate money or items to charities officially as a Guild, while certainly supporting charitable efforts as individuals within the Guild, such as the Battered Women's Shelter.

The Board felt the need for a committee to research the plans submitted for future use of our CD -- to include the purposes of the CD, as well as when it would be utilized.  Jill Adams graciously volunteered to serve on this committee, and Karen Veni will advise the group.  We need 2 more volunteers ... please call Jill, Karen, or me if you will serve with this committee.   Thanks!

What a delight to report on the survey that you recently filled out -- almost everyone wanted Saturday Specials -- with instructors -- and the things that were most popular were: paste paper, letterforms, bookmaking, marbling -- in that order -- and Pauline Sager volunteered to do the organizing of this future set of specials ... so say yes if she calls for your help.

A list of Calligraphers and the hands that they like to do best needs to be compiled -- our organization gets requests for commission pieces by our members -- often through Ventana Gallery or our newsletter staff.  Kay and Leslie would like a list, and they will refer people to our great Calligraphers free of charge.  Another great service of the Guild!

Hearts to each of you on Valentine's Day and I look forward to seeing you at the mini workshop, and as the winds blow us all around on 1 March 2001!

Maggie

  Paul Freeman Award Nominations

It is that time again when nominations are being made for the Paul Freeman Award. A list of nominees will follow, they will be published in the March newsletter, voted on at the April meeting and the Awards will be presented at the May meeting. This year’s nominees are as follows:

Jill Adams: A backbone of our fundraising, membership, regular major workshop, directory and nominating committees. She has provided the Church a "needs" plan for each of our regular meetings and the mini workshops for the year so that SACG has everything they need for their meeting. She is the last one out the door after each event, still wearing her famous smile. Our 26 Letter fundraiser was a success with Jill’s help.

Denise Adler: A long time member who has served on many committees and is the year’s Book Orders chair. She has shared her many talents with SACG with a loving heart and was the co-creator of the beautiful June 2000 newsletter cover. You know the one that all the other guilds have been talking about. She was one of the sparks behind our present Secret Pals Committee. Denise is an outstanding candidate.

Janice Anabtawi: Janice has been a very active member of the Hospitality Committee, making sure that we have everything we need to eat and drink at our meetings. She travels to Thomas Reprographics and brings us all that wonderful paper each month. Janice is serving on the calendar committee and has sold most of our calendars this year, making the 2001 SACG calendar a profit maker. An outstanding member of our Guild.

Shirley Ginn: She is presently serving as Vice President and as the chair of the Awards and Memorial Committee. Since joining the Guild, she has been very active in all of their projects and fundraisers. She works quietly behind the scenes and not so quietly as our own "Vanna".

Sally Gooze: Sally is presently serving as our Programs chair and is also on the Secret Pals Committee. She has done an outstanding job of getting programs lined up for SACG for the past two years. She has drawn on her many talents and brought us some very interesting and informative programs. Sally works hard behind the scenes, volunteering to help with all our projects. She is an outstanding candidate and a valued member of the Guild.

Camille Storment: Camille is a long time member of SACG, serving on numerous committees during her membership. She was the co-creator of our June 2000 newsletter cover spending many hours sewing, folding, gluing and decorating our covers. She is presently serving on the 2002 Calendar Committee. Camille always has a smile on her face and a funny story to share with us.

Karen Veni: Karen is presently serving as our Treasurer, keeping track of all our monies. She serves on the Secret Pals Committee and last year was the Chair of it. She has folded, folded, and folded some more, helping with our successful 26 Letters fundraiser. She has shared her love of the arts with us through her books, journals and paintings. A very talented and creative woman who is very deserving of our love and honor.

* Southwest Conference*

What can I say?! If you want to look wonderful, then just be backed up by SACG. My report to the Southwest Conference shows how very successful, and vibrant we are in 2000 and 2001.  Since the only thing certain in life is change, we need to bear in mind that we have to keep working together for this king of stunning result, and stay sensitive to all kinds of new possibilities and ideas and people...

Dallas really laid out a red carpet, fabulous goodie bags, great food, wonderful Guild people -- to include 2 Monks (of monkees, as some said!) who served a fabulous dinner... Dallas had 2 framed pieces from each Guild on exhibition at the Conference -- a super idea!

We filled in a master sheet of the planned workshops for 2001 all over the S.W. Conference Guilds -- in an effort to begin to share travel costs of the instructors -- and not to have conflicts of scheduling.  S.A., Austin, and Waco will closely coordinate -- Houston doesn't now or ever have trouble filling their workshops -- but they were very interested in a master list, too.

More local S.W. teachers were also advised -- so 00 if you're willing to travel -- and want to teach, let Leslie Winakur or me know..

The Houston Guild always put their meeting ino, etc... on the backs of all bookmarks for public consumption (libraries, etc...) A great Idea!

I was amazed at the tenacity, level of learning, and creativity of the very small Guilds...

One great idea for publicity -- done with children -- Weathergrams were made (Hint:  info could be on the backs of these, too!) and displayed outdoors at tthe Main Public Library generated gobs of interest!

We are the 2nd largest Guild, behind Houston, and we had a banner year -- making us an inspiration to others -- isn't that neat!! Not only do all of you make our Guild look so good, we have spread the sunshine!

**THANKS! MERCI! GRACIAS!**

Helen Rasplicka Retrospective

A Review by Shirley Ginn

If you missed the February meeting, you missed one of the best and most inspiring programs SACG has had in recent times. Helen Rasplicka overcame her shyness and bared her works to us. She had a great number of her works at the meeting; some borrowed from the present owner and some from her own private collection. We were able to peruse the works and handle them. What a joy!

Helen shared with us her journey in calligraphy, bookmaking and the arts. Her presentation was filled with slides of her calligraphic work taking us into her creative world and sharing with us her thoughts and feelings concerning the pieces. I learned a lot about Helen but more importantly, I was inspired to use some of those treasures that I have been hoarding and put a pen, some ink and my spirit into a piece. There is quite a lot of handmade paper in my studio that needs to be written on.

Of course, Bill Waddington’s presentation to Helen of an Award from the Secret Shoe Society was priceless. Everyone was in tears from laughter but we all know that there is a Secret Shoe Society out there that just might be lurking around the corner watching you!

Thank you Helen for sharing with each of us a glimpse of your very personal thoughts and feelings. A place that most of us are terrified to share with others. Your program was so very inspirational for each of us. I am quite proud to say I know Helen Rasplicka, the artist, and I hope that others will be willing to share with us their artful journey in the near future. We all learn through one another.
