SHIRLEY'S  SCRIBBLES

Thank you to our October hostesses - Pam Thomas, Rudy Gonzales, Francene Smith, Jay Roche, Gigi Starnes, Juliet Bickley and a special thank you to Lynn Rothe for a beautiful centerpiece.  Our Guild was fed well at the October meeting.  Ian Harkness, our friend from Dallas, had a wonderful display of his paper, leather and calligraphy goods for sale.  I was so excited to see so many new choices of paper.  His program was delightful and very interesting to hear where he gets his beautiful things.

The mornings have been a little (operative word) cooler and fall has officially arrived, according to the calendar.  Thanksgiving is just around the corner which makes me think of all the things that I am thankful for.   I am thankful for my family, for enough to eat, for a roof over my head, for good health, for a good job, for personal freedom, for wonderful friends and for SACG, a wonderful group of very creative, sharing, loving people.  We are truly blessed to have such an active and strong Guild.  My only concern is - are we too active?  We voted to have Saturday Specials and the top two vote getters have not filled, and, in the instance of the September SS, had to be canceled because we did not have enough people signed up.  Maybe, just maybe, we are doing too much.  Please let me or a Board member know your thoughts on this subject.

Our House of Cards fund raiser will be available in November for pickup.  There are still some left, so please call or see Jill Adams if you would like one.  Janice Anabtawi is selling our 2003 calendar.  Please support your Guild by purchasing a few for family, friends, and that little something that can be used as a hostess gift or thank you.

Marsha Brady gave a fabulous lecture to us on October 4th at Leslie's home.  It was so very interesting and exciting to see what and who has inspired her in her calligraphic endeavors.  It takes a lot of courage to show everyone your first calligraphic piece and then see where some studying, practicing, and encouragement can take you.  Her slide presentation was very inspiring to me and I heard one of our veteran members state, "I haven't been doing calligraphy for a long time...I have moved on to new things...but I think that I will go home and start practicing my calligraphy."  Marsha has been a favorite teacher of ours and her workshop has been very inspirational to those taking it.  Soon, we will be able to share our projects with you from the workshop.   I hope that you will be pleasantly inspired by them.  Marsha will be presenting a wonderful lecture to us at our November meeting, so please plan to be there.

A "Cher" table has been instituted at our general meeting.  Please plan to bring something to share with us.  We love to feast our eyes on all the beautiful books, calligraphy, art dolls, etc., that our members are doing.  It is time for you to show off your work.

As I close, please have a safe and happy month.  Enjoy your family, friends, and Guild.

 Hugs,

  Shirley

The EDUCATION COMMITTEE, chaired by JOAN SCHMITZ,  has had a request from a church school in Bracken for someone to teach calligraphy to children for six weeks on a volunteer basis, i.e., for no pay.  If you are available and interested please contact Joan and let her know.  Thank you.

As you know, we are the hosts of the 2003 SOUTHWEST CALLIGRAPHY CONFERENCE, and the meeting will take place on Friday and Saturday of the last weekend in January, which is January 24-25, 2003.  MAGGIE GILLIKIN is chairing the steering committee for that event.  She has circulated a sign-up sheet at the last two meetings, and many members have already agreed to contribute time, effort, etc.  If you would like to help with anything from goody bags to transportation, please contact Maggie  soon, since the committee will be going to work in the very near future.

We had a very interesting, and for some of us, a very expensive program in October, when Ian Harkness brought a zillion different papers and leathers and other assorted goods for us to purchase.  It was a regular shopping frenzy, and we now have so many papers to choose from when we work that we hardly know where to begin.  Ian is actually local - he comes from the Dallas area - so when we use up what we bought, we can invite him to visit us again!

SALLY GOOZE says hello to all from Okinawa.  She misses us, but not so much that it keeps her from having a fantastic time.  She  is enjoying teaching her classes and traveling with her new friends, and she appreciates all the e-mails and snail mail we send, so keep those letters coming.

A message from PAULINE SAGER, our ACA Liaison:  The Association for the Calligraphic Arts (ACA) is an international non-profit organization founded in 1997 for the purpose of increasing public awareness of and appreciation for the study and practice of calligraphy and lettering arts through exhibitions, publications, educational programs and related activities.  SACG has been a member of ACA since its inception.  Individual memberships are available for $30/year.  You will find some of their most recent journals in our Guild Library.  The ACA’s first online exhibit “ArtWords” is now available for viewing at:

    http://www.calligraphicarts.org

ArtWords is a beautiful representation of 51 entries by members, showing ideas from the simple to the complex, in an effort to showcase and promote an awareness of the lettering arts in our community.

EARLY BIRD SPECIAL

Marsha Brady

A tour of the klingspor museum

November 7, 2002

Marsha Brady is one of our favorite instructors, one of those few teachers who is so talented and also so able to verbalize what she does, and how and why she does it.  She comes to us from southern California where she recently retired from teaching calligraphy and design at Ceritos College.  Lucky for us, she hasn’t retired from teaching calligraphy workshops around the country.  Marsha began her career as an elementary school teacher and entered the field of calligraphy with the intent to teach, and teach she has.  She presented a lecture in October for us, explaining the artists and events that have inspired her work.  In this slide show and lecture, Marsha will take us on a tour of the Klingspor Museum in Germany, and we will have another chance to see some of the work that has been so inspirational to her, to her husband and fellow calligrapher Larry Brady, and to so many others in the world of calligraphic art.  The Klingspor Museum in Offenbach, Germany, contains many calligraphic works by the early German and Austrian calligraphers, including the works of Hermann Zapf, Friedrich Neugebauer, and Rudolf Koch.

Jay  Roche

BOOK   REVIEW

PAINTED GREETING CARDS

Elizabeth Joan Black

Northlight Books, July 2002,  $17.95

This colorful book familiarizes beginners with the basic materials, tools and techniques they need to paint their own cards.

The creative book includes advice for working with the best materials and helpful hints for painting a successful card every time.  There are guidelines for using rainbow stamp pads, watercolor, and watercolor markers.  A gallery of ideas and samples follows each project.

There are chapters on mini scapes, stunning stencils, poor man’s airbrush, the charm of the chisel brush and creative paper casting.  There are examples of several artists’ work in the book including that of former SACG  member Donna Livingston and our Canadian friend and instructor Betty Locke.

Author Elizabeth Joan Black is a graduate of the University of Toronto.  For the first part of her life music was her greatest joy but she damaged her hearing and developed hyperacusis, acute sound sensitivity.  She turned to calligraphy, the quietest creative process she could find.  She  now teaches calligraphy and card making and has been involved in the craft scene for many years.  She has written for the Bow Valley Calligraphy Quarterly and has exhibited at the San Antonio Calligraphers Guild show in Texas.

The book was a gift to our guild by the publisher and is available for check-out in our library.

MEMBERSHIP NEWS

New directories were picked up at the September meeting and those of you who joined us got to wear the beautiful new name tags. This was definitely a team effort. Pam Thomas, our Membership committee Chairperson, would like to thank Nena Richardson for getting the 2002 directory camera ready, Shirley Ginn for helping to proof read it, and Gigi Starnes for getting it printed. A wonderful group of women gathered on August 10 and sewed it together. Thanks to Beverly Carter, Angie Chaos-Peters, Maggie Gillikin, Bonnie Houser, Sylvia Stanley, Gigi Starnes, and Gayle Venticinque. We talked, laughed, snacked, and got new member packets collated, the new name tags punched and cords tied on, and 150 directories bound. Thanks again to Maggie for the use of her house and to each and every one who came to work and play.

Pam also wants to thank Kaye Yarbrough who agreed to letter all the name tags in her gorgeous Neuland hand. Twenty four hours later they were all done! Also, thanks to Gig Starnes who took the name tags and laminated them all. The great thing is they have both agreed to continue with new name tags as we have new members join this year. Thank you so much for saying yes! And thank you to the Austin Capitol Scribes whose name tags inspired us to undertake this task.

Members who did not pick up their directories at the meeting will receive them in the mail. Hopefully we’ll see you at the next meeting. Pam says the way these tasks were all accomplished as a team effort portends a great year for SACG.

Mary Bowman will be teaching a 12 week fall Oriental Brush painting class on Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m. at the Academy of Learning in Retirement. These classes at the Texan Cultures Bldg. are for people over 50, and my be started any time in the fall. Call 458-2294 for a catalog of the Monday through Thursday daytime classes. Mary also plans a limited number of classes at home at $10 each, on brush handling for control, painting note cards while learning. No supply list. Call 692-9099 to schedule a class.
