Lines by Leslie
Hi, everybody. I'm happy to report that our October meeting was wonderful fun. We had a great Early Bird Special, thanks to Rudy Gonzales and his sign painting techniques. We even each came away with our names painted on foam board by Rudy -- what a treat. Rudy is planning some seminars in the future, and he will let us know the dates.

We had a nice short business meeting, followed by a leisurely interlude for delicious refreshments and then plenty of time for our program. Thank you, as always, to Loni Carlson and the Hospitality Committee for feeding us so well.

At its October meeting, the Board approved a trial portable microphone system to assist with communication at the meetings, and we were able to get a system for half the expected price, an extra added bonus. The microphone proved an asset and we were able to use through out the meeting and for the program. It was approved unanimously by those present at the General Meeting. Thank you to all who contributed their support.

Our October meeting was a great hands-on book making program with Pauline Sager. Pauline did a wonderful job and we all came home with a beautiful no glue, no sew, "slit & slide" book. Please note that Pauline did share some of her equipment with us, and we need to check through our things, because two of her items were apparently misplaced. So please inventory your supply basket if you were there and contact Pauline if you find something you didn't own last week.

In an effort to keep the business meetings brief, we will continue to post the minutes of the last meeting and the Treasurer's report. The President and to the Vice President will be certain that both are read prior to the meeting, but be sure to check the board if you prefer to read everything yourself. There are also usually some interesting fliers regarding activities going on outside of San Antonio, so try not to miss those either.

Some things to keep in mind for the near future: Pauline has volunteered to chair the Calendar Committee for the 1999-2000 calendar. It sounds early, but it's never too early. So please be thinking about themes and remember, she'll need some volunteers for the committee as well. At the next Board meeting, October 29, I'll be appointing a nominating committee for next year's slate of officers. Again, it seems early, but it's really not, because there will be no board meeting in November or December due to the Thanksgiving and Christmas Holidays. So please be thinking about the slate of officers you might want for next year. Think about volunteering for next year.

And one last thing -- we will be having our Fall Exhibit in November at the Mini Mansions Tea Room at Ventana, and the Spring Exhibit at Ventana Gallery. Watch the newsletter for further information. So please be planning and working on pieces for both exhibits, and thinking about a theme for the Spring show in May. We have our work cut out for us, but it's fun and worth the effort. See you in November.

Leslie

REMINDERS

Early Bird

Sherri Kiesel comes to San Antonio from Midland, MI. She will have works for sale that demonstrate the Contemporary Decorated Letters that she will teach in the weekend workshop. Sherri has long been fascinated with line, letters and the written word. Come see how she has rendered these vibrant contemporary versals, and welcome her to our Guild.
Early Bird begins promptly at 6:30.

Program

Sherri Kiesel will take a break during our business meeting and then she's going to share "Confessions of a Left-Handed Calligrapher". Even right-handers will enjoy Sherri's confessions and revelations.

Our first exhibit of the fall will be at the Viva-Mini Mansions Tea Room -- with a holiday (Christmas, Channukah, winter, or religious theme). Maggie and Brixey will be there at 3:00 p.m. on November 13. Please call Maggie or Brixey if you need a special turn in time. Maggie reminded everyone at the October meeting that the "gallery" in the tea room looks really nice with about sixteen pieces.

Membership Notes
from Mary and Jo

You should have your new directory by now -- if you don't give Mary a call. She has a few extras available at $1.50 each for members who like to have more than one copy.

We currently have 102 members. Our badges have always been a beautiful part of our Guild meetings. Let us know if you need a new badge. We also appreciate everyone being responsible about returning them to the quilt at the close of the meetings.

Mary Bowman & Jo Drake

ATTENTION

Pauline is missing the 4 1/2" x 6 1/2" green self-healing mat and a 6" metal ruler she loaned out for the October program. Please check your supplies to see whether either of these items was inadvertently mixed in with your supplies.

Y2K Calendar
Call for Entries

Yes, folks! It seems hard to believe that the year 2-0-0-0- is just around the corner. How strange it is going to be for us when we no longer will write "19---"!!

Well, my dears! The year 2000 is even closer for those who produce a calendar. Now is the time when we set the wheels in motion for our next fund-raiser calendar. At the November meeting we will ask for your suggestions on a theme for the Y2K calendar.

Please put on your thinking cap and dream up a theme which will have a universal appeal. The calendar committee will select from the suggested list and submit them for a vote at the January meeting.

Pavasa, Y2K Calendar Chairman

WITH SHERRI KIESEL
Nov. 7 & 8
Warm Springs Hospital
5101 Medical Drive
Cost $80

Line and color come together to create these contemporary letters based upon the versal letterform. Beginning with pencil and tracing paper overlaid on versal models, we will familiarize ourselves with the underlying form of these spontaneous letters, then move on to using a technical pen, making our letters come alive with movement of line.

The spaces within the letter created by our line drawings now give us the opportunity to lay in color, creating a beautiful contemporary decorated letter. Playing with color, we will explore a variety of coloring techniques, utilizing watercolors, water-soluble colored pencils and gouache to highlight and decorate our letters.

SUPPLY LIST:

CALL FOR CHRISTMAS CARDS
Let's bring back one of our old traditions -- sharing your handmade, personally created cards with fellow Guild members. Please make an extra one so we can include it in the January newsletter. This was always one of my favorite issues in the past.

I'm dreaming of being snowed under with your wonderful Christmas cards this year! Bring with you to the December meeting or mail to me -- early December so we can get them in the January newsletter. Thanks!!!!

AUSTIN EXHIBIT
If you get a chance, visit the Capital City Scribes exhibit at the Capitol in conjunction with the Texas Book Fair. Hanging dates are November 13 to 15 and the theme is Wildflowers. Kate Van Dyke tells us they are trying to get the same exhibit up at the Wildflower Center in the spring, but this has not been confirmed. (Remember our Fall Exhibit turn in date is November 13, also.)

SPRING EXHIBIT THEMES
Maggie and Brixey are asking for suggestions from the Guild membership for a theme for the Spring Exhibit -- if you have any ideas, please call Maggie or Brixey and let them know. Maggie wants to publish the possible list of themes in the December newsletter. The Guild will vote/select a theme at the January meeting. Maggie has reserved the Ventana Gallery for our Spring Exhibit -- begin thinking about your piece(s) -- it will be here before we know it!

MORE STUDIO TIPS

When changing color within a work, always change it within an individual letter for unity as this makes the change gradual. Also do not use weak or light color placement at the beginning of a work. Use strong color placement for emphasis. ... Timothy Botts

Try colored pencils over gouache to soften the effect. If Luma Pearlescent Ink thickens, thin it with distilled water. ... Calligraffiti, Memphis Calligraphy Guild

Let paint dry on nib when beginning to work. Let it get crusty, then color will stay wet longer in successive uses of the nib. ... Genessee Valley Guild

TIPS FROM CASA PAVASA

Always make sure to coat brush bristles and pen nibs with soap before using masking fluid. The masking fluid will wash right out. Otherwise, your pen and brush will be ruined.

If you fill your pen with a brush, hold the brush in the other hand. Use the handle to hold your paper down as you letter.

Styrofoam meat trays turned upside down make wonderful ink bottle holders when appropriate holes are cut in them. Cut notches into the tray for brush and pen holders.

Small round cosmetic containers (such as from eye cream, lip gloss, etc.) are ideal for keeping a special blend of gouache, e.g. gold and white for decorating. Also, keep a special mixing brush for each.

Make a quick, easy and inexpensive eyedropper by cutting down a plastic straw. Dip into ink, squeeze the end of the straw to retain ink and release it into your container.

Rubber cement thinner is a very useful item to keep in the studio. Cleans fingerprints from photos, removes price sticker glue from tools, and removes excess wax from paste-ups.

When you find the refills of your Dryline dispensers keep breaking -- even if new -- check the applicator for a build up of adhesive. Clean off with rubber cement.

Telephone Chain

The Telephone Chain is now reorganized for the coming year. We are happy to report that all the committee members have graciously agreed to serve again. Please remember that if you have an emergency message to be communicated to the membership, you must call President Leslie Winakur or Vice President Bonnie Houser first for approval, before action can be taken.

Discoveries
18th Annual International
Conference of Calligraphy
July 26 - August 2, 1998
University of San Diego

Discoveries A to Z:

A Attending Serendipities was a plus. I particularly enjoyed Louis Lemoine's "A Second Look Behind the Scenes of Euro Disneyland Paris Main Street Graphics." We got to view slides of the hand-drawn "signage" and see his original mechanicals and pencil sketches of the signs. This was but one of many wonderful Serendipities.
B Breaking out in laughter at "early" work of the faculty, and being awestruck by their "recent" works.
C Cyberscribing face-to-face and putting faces with calligraphers who chat by computer.
D Discussing the pronunciation of Uncial.
E Eating a juicy orange donated by the Orange County Guild.
F Feeling humbled by all the talent around me.
G Going to the San Diego Zoo and watching a young girl confidently create zoological names with a small (maybe 1" or 2" long) strip of leather strip -- yielded as if it were a broad-edged pen.
H Having your picture taken with the Bishop's statue, while the Bishop was "dressed" with Discoveries' cap and goodie bag.
I Ignoring the teasing about taking two desserts. (We walked off the pounds...)
J Just taking a deep breath and enjoying the view of Sea World's fireworks.
K Knowing that Ima Gnome was rescued from her kidnappers (the gardeners) and was relocated near the University Center. If Sir Gnome attended this year's conference, I didn't see him.
L Listening to five scribes' angelic voices during the Hildegard of Bingen lecture.
M Making a colored-pencil alphabet in Jane Shibata's class.
N Noon-timing with calligraphers from Argentina, Australia, Canada, China, England, France, Germany, Ireland, Japan, South Africa, Spain, and the United States of America.
O Ooohing and ahhhing over chalk mosaics on the sidewalks.
P Penipulating with 506+/- scribes.
Q Quitting socializing and/or calliging about midnight to sleep a little.
R Raving about Joe D'Ambrosio's four-needle-hinged-book class.
S Seeing slides of Rick Griffins' wild, amazing, bizarre, wonderful works shown by Carl Rohrs during the evening lecture "Surfing to the Sacred: the Art of RickGriffin" at Shiley Theater.
T Taking in all the wonderful art at the Scribe's Store and tools of the trade show.
U Updating my address book with names of new friends.
V Viewing work in progress in Michael Jacob's "The Book as Sculpture" class.
W Watching the Discoveries' scroll logo being created on a sand castle near University Center.
X Xing my mark to vote for my favorite piece at the daily participants' exhibit.
Y Yielding the right-of-way to Donna Young and/or Kathleen Dunning-Torbett's golf cart.
Z Zipping through the show-and-tell to make sure I saw the results of all 40+/- classes.
