Flourishes - November 2000

MMO

It rained!! and rained... and RAINED... but certainly not on our fall parade! What a busy meeting in October! The Early Bird Special saw the "Angelica Alphabetica", dolls from the mini-whorkshop share the spotlight with Gwen Weaver's and Mark Van Stone's exciting pieces!!
At our business meeting "the Golden Threads of Freindship - 2001" Calendar was presented by Pauline Sager, our chairman; Janice Anabtawi will head the sales committee. So BUY, BUY!! Our thanks go to the many artists, sewing committee, and Pauline, who all made this lovely edition possible. Thanks again to Darla Peek, our 2002 Calendar chairman. Be thinking of some themes -- we'll need to make decisions on themes for both the Spring Exhibit and the Calendar next month -- so put on your thinking caps! Jill Adams is reminding us that we will present the sextons with a thinksgiving money gift (from $1.00 donations from each one of us) for all their hard work on our behalf at each monthly meeting and also at the mini-workshops.
Kudos are in order for our own newsletter staff for the really nifty color choice for Gwen Weaver's design on our October cover -- really nice work.
We voted to offer advertising at $25.00/half page to select art outlets of special interest to our members -- these ads would appear on the inside covers of our directory -- our decision also carried the proviso that those businesses would receive a copy (complimentory) of our directory but that the membership information could not be sold or shared with any other businesses.
It was felt by the Board that more research was needed before the issue of advertising in our newsletters could even be brought to the Board for its receommendation to the membership. Beverly Carter is doing the research of other guild newsletter advertising -- if you have any ideas or interest in this area, please call Beverly or me.
Congratulations to Shirley Ginn and Karen Vini, who have solved the contest puzzle that I put into last months newsletter -- prizes will be presented at the November meeting! Thanks to our own hospitality committee for the pumpkin/fall theme goodies. Mark Van Stone gave us a humor filled look at the very foundations of calligraphy -- Romans. His lecture and slides were superb, as usual. We are so lucky to have Mark so close by in Austin.
The workshop with Gwen and Mark was truly first class. Gwen's portfolio was drooled over while both of them provided such wonderful demonstrations, while managing to give each of us so much individual attention. WHAT A TREAT!
Our next Board meeting will occur at 7 p.m. on 26 October at Joan Schmietz's house. We welcome all of you to join us at any of these Board meetins; Joan is so warm and the ideas generated are such fun and so stimulating -- I NEVER thought that Board meeting could be so enjoyable. So come join us.

Maggie

Thank you to Jill Adams for coordinating the use of the meeting room in spite of some recent problems.
Our October refreshments were provided by Melanie Capps, Sally Gooze, and Maggie Gillikin. Delicious!
Exhibit time is not as far off as we may think. Ventana Gallery is expecting our masterpieces on Monday April 2, 2001, and will provide an opening reception on Friday, April 6. The show will run from April 7 to May 7. They will accept only pieces which are for sale. Please be thinking about a theme. But meanwhile, "go to your studio and make stuff."
We are happy to hear that Virginia Harrison and Cheri Wolf are recovering well. And Priscilla Earl is getting out and about and may make it to a meeting soon.
We would like to extend our condolences to Shirley Ginn on the loss of her brother-in-law.
Please remember that to set the Communications Committee going, we must contact either President Maggie Gillikin or V.P. Shirley Ginn. They will contact the committee.
If you have not received your newsletter within 3 days after the mini-workshop, please call Mavis Caudell, or pick up your copy from Jill Adams at the next general meeting.
Pauline Sager is our Association for the Calligraphic Arts (ACA) liaison. She will have individual membership forms available at the next meeting.. Membership includes a subscription to Letter Arts Review. Annual dues are $30.
Our library is full of wonderful selections, many of which are out of print and not available anywhere else. Be sure to take advantage of it! Maggie, Sally, and Leslie will be doing an inventory of the library contents in October.
Welcome to our newest member, Carol Cameron. We now total 99 members.
Treasurer Karen Veni is still accepting suggestions for ways to invest part of our CD, in order to have seed money for future fundraisers. Please submit suggestions in writing.
Thank you to Bill Waddington, Darla Peek, Maggie Gillikin, and Anita Hyman for donating the October door prizes. And congrats to the winners, Joan Schmitz, Gayle Venticinque, Loni Carlson, Maggie Gillikin, and Leslie Winakur. Handmade donations are always welcome.

Early Bird

At 6:45 Denise Adler will demonstrate the incredible Xyron™ machine and all the miracles it performs. It laminates, applies adhesive, makes magnets, etc., etc., etc. (As far as we can tell, it doesn't slice, dice or chop!)

Program

We have had wonderful praise for our June 2000 newsletter cover from guilds all over the country. Now Denise Adler will explain how she and her team accomplished that beautiful Tyvek™ cover with the artwork on it. And we'll each get to try our hand at part of the process.

The mini-workshop on November 16 will be presented by Joan Schmitz. Joan will teach Legend, a lovely type style developed by Ernest Schneidler.

Please bring a 2mm ZIG marker or any 2mm nib and your choice of ink. Joan will supply lined paper. No other supplies are necessary. Contact Gayle Venticinque for further information. If for any reason you cannot make the workshop, please be sure to cancel with Gayle.

We are very sad to report that Karlgeorg Hoefer passed away on October 10, 2000. He was an inspirational teacher for many calligraphers all over the world. In lieu of flowers, his son requests that donations be made to the Deutsche Krebshilfe (cancer research center), Konto 909093 Bankcode BLZ 380 500 00, Sparkasse, Bonn, Germany; codeword " Bestattung Karlgeorg Hoefer."

Timothy Botts has just released his latest book, The Holy Bible, in which he has created expressive word pictures for 360 biblical passages. It is full color throughout, with a ribbon marker. Available through John Neal Books, hardcover, $59.99.

The latest issue of Letter Arts Review has 12 pages devoted to "Design and Layout, part 4," by Sheila Waters. There are great illustrations and diagrams. This and past issues are available in our Guild's library.

Our own "26 Letters" poster is still available from Jill Adams for $10. and the leftover newsletter covers are available for $5. The poster will make a great holiday gift for teachers and others, and the covers can be laminated for use as placemats for children\rquote s gifts. The "26 Letters" books and slipcases are in the works and will be ready soon. We still have a few left for sale at $30.

Bill Waddington still has his "Emily 2000" calendars available. He had a lovely exhibit at Ventana in October.

Ewan Clayton will be giving a workshop in Austin, February 6-8, 2001. He is here from England. This is a unique chance to learn from an international calligrapher. Contact Sharon Zeugin for more information.

Studio Tips

Clean out the clogged tip on a technical pen with several quick jabs into a kneaded eraser. The clay-like material pulls out clogs but leaves no plug in the pen.

To have enough ink for a marvelous copperplate flourish, use a reservoir on your copperplate nib. Make the reservoir by wrapping a tiny strip of tape around the nib or use a Mitchell type reservoir.

UHU Glue is resoluble. Apply, let dry, lick and stick.

Let gouache dry for 24 hours before trying to erase guide lines.

If paint or ink is bleeding, try Pounce™ on the paper. If the paper is resisting ink, treat the paper with gum sandarac.

Arches text Wove paper is great for book pages. It is smooth enough for small nibs, and it takes watercolor and paste without pre-stretching.

Thank you to Pauline Sager and her Cyberscribes friends for gleaning these tips for us.

Maggie writes: It was a special challenge to write this month's column, while inserting the "N" shape, so that it makes for interesting reading, at least…So, in the vein of "pieces and parts" - can you figure out what either of these says? Prizes will be awarded to the winners in December.

~ Calendars ~ Calendars ~ Calendars ~

The holiday season will soon be upon us. For that friend who is hard to buy for, think of our 2001 calendar with its theme of friendship. Two locations have been provided for the convenience of members who cannot make the meetings or who might need calendars in between meetings. In the Norhwest area, contact Janice Anabtawi, and in the Northeast area contact Pauline Sager. For mail orders, contact Pauline Sager by phone or e-mail, pavasa@aol.com.

Now that Pauline Sager and her committee have created another outstanding calendar for SACG, we are ready for 2002. The calendar committee for 2002 has had some high tech meetings (via e-mail) and we want to produce a calendar of the same caliber that Pauline unveiled at the October meeting. Let's get a head start on the 2002 calendar project and find a theme/name for the calendar. We would like to vote on this at the November meeting. If something occurs to you between now and the November meeting, please jot it down or call/e-mail one of the committee members so we can get it on the ballot. Committee members include: Darla Peek, Camille Storment, Janice Anabtawi and Pam Thomas. We are open to your ideas.

So far we have these suggested themes to vote on at the November meeting: Reflections, Angelic Expressions, Walking Down Memory Lane, A Tribute to Female Poets, Illuminations , and Dream Catchers.

The calendar is one of the fine traditions of the Guild that provides a great opportunity to shine the spotlight on calligraphy and keep \par calligraphy in front of the public (including our family and friends) for a year -- while making some money for the Guild. If you would like to contribute art work, please contact Darla Peek or a member of the committee.
