C O V E R A R T I S T * * * Gwen Weaver

Whew! I survived the first meeting as President -- thanks are due to all of you for being so patient and helpful during the whole evening. It all began with the Hospitality Committee, filling us full of goodies, to include Pam Braha's own birthday cake -- boy! was it all yummy! It was wonderful to munch and also feast our eyes on all the Secret Dragon Pal 2000 treats!
We got right down to a business-packed meeting with the acceptance of the 2000-2001 Budget. We got a glimpse of the 2001 Calendar and it's just lovely with great continuity of drawings and letterforms -- good job Pauline and artists! We decided that the price for this calendar would be $7.00, and it will go on sale at the October meeting, we hope.
Shirley Ginn showed us the book chosen from Hazel Carter's own collection that the Guild purchased for the library in Hazel's memory.
Jill Adams passed out our new 2000-2001 Directories and I won't even need my bifocals to locate that pink eye-popper -- perfect for a directory that I use so often! Thank you to Thea and Jill! Our posters and posters books are selling well, the mini workshops are filling fast, and just about everyone got a newsletter in August. (It's easy to be the president when it works like this)! We also voted to donate $1.00 each to the hardworking sextons who set up our meeting place each month! Jill Adams is collecting the money and it will be presented to them at Thanksgiving. Thanks, everyone.
We discussed plans for our CD in the future, a need to supply possible "seed" money for fundraising projects, while also insuring that such a plan would have safeguards, and keep the CD from being used and potentially not replenished. One suggestion was to split the CD into 2 funds - one more fluid than the other, and the fluid one used only as "seed" funds - to be refilled with the first profits from the fundraiser it provided the "seeds" for. Whatever we do in the future with the CD, we want to do it well. Many of our long term members worked so hard to amass those funds. We have plenty of time, so put on your thinking caps, and give me a call.
We also discussed using the space in our newsletters (and future directories) for advertisers, with special interest toward art stores. This paid advertising would help defray costs of printing. We're batting the idea of paid advertising around; let me know what you think. This is one issue that might reach a vote next month.
When I began whining about needing a chairman for the 2002 Calendar, Darla Peek quickly and graciously volunteered for that big job -- you have our thanks, thanks, thanks, thanks, thanks, Darla! Please help her with theme ideas -- it will be our 25th anniversary edition -- Pauline Sager is collecting suggestions for our own 25th birthday bash -- set for next April -- so call her with your ideas!
Our Secret Pal Program was such fun, with most of us completely fooled by our terrific Secret Dragon Pals -- what creativity! As we look forward to next month, please be sure to consider the two fall workshops coming up -- 2 for the price of 1; Gwen Weaver and Mark Van Stone in October, and the weekend with the talented Sharon Zeugin in November.
Our next board meeting will be at Joan's house on 26 October at 7 p.m., and all are always welcome.

WORKSHOP INFORMATION

We have two wonderful workshops coming up this fall. The first will take place at Discovery School on October 7-8. It will feature mark Van Stone, whom many of us know and love. Mark will feature the broad edge pen, and Gwen will feature the pointed pen. They will both be teaching the use of pressure to vary the letters. This is a wonderful chance to learn from two distinguished instructors. The supply list is in your September issue of Flourishes. The cost will be $90. for the weekend.
November 4-5 we will feature Sharon Zeugin of Austin. Sharon is very talented and will teach Jazz Writing and Calligraphic Journaling.

This class will focus on ways to facilitate jazz writing through:

* Creating a safe and supportive environment for play and experimentation
* Structured exercises designed for loosening up
* Unstructured group "doodle time" (think of a quilting bee)
