Summer 2000 has been hot, dry and dusty - as well as cool, creative and thirst quenching ... the first three adjectives are typical for any Texas summer ... the last three, however deal with: the near completion of the limited edition poster books and boxes (a truly cool project), the Secret Pal Program (lots of creative samplings for the September Meeting), and a wonderful Calligraphy Exchange on 3 August (where friends could get a "taste" of each other's summer activities)! Our June Potluck at my house was such fun because so many people came and made it an event to remember -- the food was fabulous -- thanks to Sally Gooze and Janice Anabtawi for early set-up that day. What an array of members have been working on our poster books and boxes; Leslie Winakur, Shirley Ginn, Beverly Carter, Laura Heye, Bonnie Houser, Karen Veni, B.J. Nochol, Gayle Venticinque, Francene Smith, Sally Gooze, Helen Rasplicka have all chipped in and done great stuff -- wait 'til you see those beauties!! Pauline Sager, Jill Adams, Thea Moore, and Hazel Tillson have all been creating our Calendar and Directory! Special thanks go to Joan Schmitz for teaching 2 lettering workshops this summer in June and July ... with all proceeds going to the Reggie Fund. We're more prepared for Reggie now, Joannie. Thanks!!

In the midst of all this summer activity we were all saddened to learn of Hazel Carter's death. Hazel was a long-time member of the Guild. In addition to extending our deepest sympathy to her family, the library will be purchasing a book in her memory. Our thanks go to Joan Schmitz for representing the Guild at her funeral and to Mavis Caudill, Thea Moore and their committee for such a prompt, efficient communications network that performs so well, even when the news is sad.

As I get ready for my "first" board meeting (7 P.M. - 31 August - Joan Schmitz's house). I feel like Charlie Brown and his baseball skills -- Leslie left such L-A-R-G-E footprints ... Sirley Ginn got the first ball rolling with a summer organizational meeting, so I know that all of us have exciting programs, mini's, workshops, and newsletters in the year ahead, and I look forward to our first meeting on Sept. 7th.

WORKSHOP

M V S - - G W

Clash of the Romans
Two Approaches to the Modulated Line

Mark Van Stone and Gwen Weaver will present a workshop October 7-8, 2000, in which we will have the opportunity to explore the classically pure roman letterforms using two different tools. Mark, drawing on his intimate knowledge of classical aesthetics, will teach his elegant and graceful Roman Caps using a broad edge pen with subtle pen pressure to "carve" the letters.

Gwen teaches those same letters using a pointed pen to define the line and delicately "sculpt" them with pressure. As with any approach to this classic letterform, the rules of proportion and height/weight ratio are important to understand. Once understood, they can be played with - just for fun! It will become evident that the nib - either broad edge or pointed - doesn't matter as much as pressure and proportion to give these letters vitality and make them sing. The pressure and subtle modulation of line fill these mighty old letterforms with modern sparkle.

The second day of the workshop will explore similar attributes of lower case
letterforms, Carolingian and Roman minuscules.

Workshop fee: to be announced.

Supplies:

Whatever holder - straight, oblique; nibs - broad and pointed but including Mitchell 3, 4, 5; any writing fluid you are accustomed to using; graph or lined paper and/or layout bond paper (you will be supplied with 11" x 17" sheets of lines that will show through). Bring a favorite quote and some good paper and all the "usual stuff."

Thank You

I can hardly explain how I felt when I saw my beautiful President's Book at the June Pot Luck Dinner. The paste paper is magnificent, the structure is so unique, and each entry is so thoughtfully done and so representative of its contributor. I was overwhelmed and speechless at the party, and I kept that book on my coffee table almost all summer so that I could look at it over and over and over again. I showed it off to everyone I know. And now it has a special place in my glass cabinet where no harm can come to it, and an even more special place in my heart.

A Limerick by Maggie

There once was a group, SACG,
Whose members were wonderfully nifty.
Now Maggie's in charge
But Leslie's boots are so large
How will it be? It's a mystery!

Note:
The 2001 Calendar,
The Golden Thread of Friendship,
will be available for sale at the
October meeting.

Dragon Pals
September Program

You still have a little time to spoil your pal. They should receive at least three wonderful handmade items, but the more the merrier. All the treasures will make a fabulous exhibit! Please arrive by 6:30 with the items you've received and arrange them in the space marked with your name. The program this year will be shortened a little to allow more time to view the treasures, but you'll still have time to share your one favorite gift. If you're unable to come to the meeting, please send the items you've received with a friend, or call one of the committee members. It's a loss to us all and a real disappointment to your pal not to exhibit their work. Remember to bring a handmade card or gift for your pal. See you in September.

Dear San Antonio Calligraphers Guild members who attended my May workshop,

Thank you very much for inviting me back to teach in beautiful San Antonio. I had a wonderful time! I wanted to express my gratitude to all of you for attending: special acknowledgement goes to Joan & Tom Schmitz, and to Edith Davis for their kind hospitality. I will return to share what we all love: letters, books, and cards: Joan and I have set a date, so mark April 6-7, 2002, on your calendar. Between now and then, make lots of boxes, cards and books for loved ones and enjoy the process as you practice your letterforms. Again, thanks from the bottom of my heart!
