Flourishies - September 1999

Lines by Leslie
Hi, Everybody. Welcome back! I hope you all have been having a wonderful summer and are ready for an exciting year of calligraphy and calligraphic arts.

Before we get to this year's activities, I want to thank Barbara Gere for volunteering her beautiful home for the June Pot Luck Dinner. We all had a terrific time, the food was great, and the Gere's hospitality was superb. We've already begun our new year with our Calligraphy Exchange in August. The turnout was excellent and all that attended found some very good bargains. The silent auction was a success once again, and the Guild will benefit from the profits. Thank you to Maggie Gillikin and Jill Adams and all of the committee members who helped with the preparation and setup for this event. Thank you to Janice Anabtawi for the hospitality setup, and thank you also to all of the participants, both private and commercial vendors, who took part. This was a fun way to start off the new year.

Once again, a planning committee met over the summer to coordinate the major and mini-workshops, the newsletter covers, the Early Bird Specials, and the programs. We hope you find the plans as enticing as we do. September's meeting will be the first of a year full of a vast array of activities. Be sure to be there for the unveiling of the Secret Pals. Please remember to bring everything you received over the summer for the display. This is sure to be a fantastic exhibit.

We have a great lineup of Mini-Workshops scheduled, thanks to B.J. Grant and Gayle Venticinque. Remember to sign up for these. They fill up very fast.

We have a three part Major Workshop with Marsha Brady beginning in September. Sally Gooze has some great programs scheduled for us.

The new calendar will be available at the September meeting, and thanks to Pauline Sager and her committee, we have a beautiful calendar for the year 2000, one we can all be proud of. Jill Adams and her Fund Raising Committee have been working over the summer and have some news for us and some exciting plans for this year.

Maggie Gillikin and Bonnie Houser planned some very interesting Early Bird Specials. Darla Peek is already working hard on our newsletters, and her efforts are much appreciated by all. And, of course, we have some business to attend to. I'm already breathless from just listing all I can remember, and we haven't even begun yet! So, please be sure to come for the September meeting, and come prepared for an evening full of fun, art, business, and, most especially, new and renewed friendships. Looking forward to seeing everyone again,

.................................................................................................Leslie

Early Bird

Secret Pals are the Early Birds this time. Bring ALL the items your Secret Pal sent to you during the summer to put on the display tables and we can begin our evening promptly at 7:00.

Gallery of Secrets

You are cordially invited to stroll the gallery of secrets at the September meeting, when the Secret Pals will bring all of the wonderful things they've received during the summer. And since a secret can't be kept forever, the pal's identities will be revealed.

Pals, if you can't make the meeting, please be sure to send your goodies for display with a friend, or contact Karen Veni at 558-4403, and she'll make sure your gifts are displayed.

Remember to bring a thank you card for your pal!

Mini-Workshops for 1999-2000

As you know from the mail-out, Gayle Venticinque began signing people up for the mini-workshops at the Calligraphy Exchange. There was a good turnout and lots of folks signed up; however, still have slots available. They are filling very fast, so see her at the September meeting, or mail her a check before then if you want to make sure of your reservations. We are limiting classes to 30 people.

Below is the line up for our 8 mini-workshops that are held at Warm Springs Rehabilitation Hospital on Medical Drive from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on the following Thursdays:

Secret Pals 2000

We have a proposition for you. Normally our Secret Pal program runs during the summer months, what if we run the Secret Pal program for a year? A whole year of wonderful secret surprises in your mail box, on your doorstep and via unsuspecting messenger! Think about it and be ready to vote at the October meeting. This is what we have in mind - begin the program in November 1999 and reveal the Pals in November 2000. Send a total of six (6) items to your SP, two with calligraphy. That means something every other month, if you want to look at it that way. Here are some of the opportunities you have when SP runs for a year - birthday, anniversary, and all the major holidays. Other guilds have done this very successfully.
Vicki Belcher and Darla Peek have agreed to be the committee chairs.

Notifications Committee

Just a reminder to call Mavis Caudill with news about Guild members. Mavis will get the Telephone Chain in motion and Thea Moore will get the e-mails routed. The committee has a new name to encompass what they do - they keep us notified … especially when we're between newsletters. We really do appreciate this committee!

HeartStrings Calendar for 2000
SACG calendar cover created by Pauline Sager

I am pleased to announce "HeartStrings", the SACG calendar for 2000, will be available at the September meeting. This edition has the added touch of being hand bound with color-coordinated cord. A special committee of Maggie, Leslie, Shirley, Beverly, & yours truly, spent 6 hours one Saturday in August, collating and folding the 2,400 sheets to yield 300 copies, and bound 100. The following Monday, Anita, Maggie, Beverly and Leslie bound the remaining 200 copies. A lot of work went in to make this a special edition, but everyone had fun. This is what it's all about - working together in teams to produce a handsome result.

I wish to express my appreciation to everyone who made the calendar possible. The contributors who submitted the beautiful artwork: Jane Fair, Barbara Gere, Maggie Gillikin, Bonnie Houser, Vera Irby, Darla Peek, Helen Rasplicka, Eleanor Russell, Joan Schmitz, Sylvia Stanley, Gayle Ventincique, Leslie Winakur and Kaye Yarbrough. The calendar committee members: Jill Adams, for compiling the quotes for the month pages; Hazel Tillson, the forward page; Barbara Gere, pasting in all the dates, holidays, and quote strips for every month; and Sylvia Stanley for proofreading. A big THANK YOU!

Fran Sloan

was an unbelievably positive force within the calligraphic community. Not only a talented artist and calligrapher, Fran also inspired and enriched our lives through her teaching, lecturing, writing, and championing of the cause of calligraphy within the art community. Through her AHA experiences, the lives of many calligraphers were uplifted and rejuvinated. Her death on December 9, 1998 caused many of us to pause and remember with fondness her influence on our vocation and in our guilds.

Since her death many of you have asked that the ACA recognize Fran's contributions to our lives by creating a Memorial Fund in her honor.

In response to these requests, the ACA has established The Fran Sloan Memorial Fund to commemorate Fran's AHA spirit and to attempt to continue her work in bringing the joy of lettering to all. We have many different ideas on the best way to use this Fund, including scholarships, a library, an ACA permanent calligraphic collection which could be made available for appropriate exhibits (and would of course include some of Fran's work), teaching guides, and other educational purposes. We also welcome your suggestions. How much we will be able to do is of course entirely dependent upon the donations made to the fund. If donations are limited, we will create a scholarship or other benefit to the community. However, it is the desire of the ACA to establish The Fran Sloan Memorial Fund as a long-term charity, benefiting many for years to come.

Donations of any size are most welcome in Fran's memory, or in the memory of other beloved calligraphers. Everyone who donates to The Fran Sloan Memorial Find will be listed in a tribute book which will be designed and hand lettered by Fran's friend Carol Dubosh. The book will be in an accordion fold format and will be on display at both 1999 Calligraphy Conferences and at future events. The first fifty people making a donation to the fund of $50.00 or more will receive a beautiful print of Fran's work.

Gifts to the ACA Foundation and The Fran Sloan Memorial Fund are charitable contributions and can be deducted on United States income tax statements as charitable contributions.

Please make checks payable in U.S. Funds to: Foundation of the Calligraphics Arts

Mail to: ACA, 132 Great Road, Suite 200, Stow, MA 01775 USA, for information, phone: 978-461-0400 or e-mail: abc@calligraphicarts.org Website: www.calligraphicarts.org

There will be extra copies of the forms at the Sept meeting.

Thinking of Members

Our thoughts and prayers are with Lucy Dalkowitz (aka Lucy Duck-o-witz thanks to WJW) as she recovers from gall bladder surgery earlier this month. We wish you a speedy recovery so you can return to your "cult" activities.

We're also remembering Rebecca Ingram, her aunt succumbed to cancer and her father is very ill. She has her hands full right now.

Both of you, please take care and know that we are thinking of you. Hope to see you at a Guild meeting soon.

By the way, this same message goes to anyone who had an injury, illness or personal loss this past summer. During the summer months we tend to lose contact with each other, it's time to catch up -- come to the September meeting and get re-acquainted.
