Thoughts from the President

Image of President Suzan OConnor
I just read something interesting: both Google and Apple are releasing software that will soon bring augmented-reality (AR) apps to tens of millions of smartphones and tablets. I have such mixed feelings. I love technology, and I know that it has the potential to be both amazing and eminently practical. But I also know that it has the capacity to further divide and isolate us as we look down at our “customized” reality on a screen. Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg said, “Think of how many of the things around us [that] don’t actually need to be physical.” Well, Mr. Zuckerberg, that inspires me to do just the opposite: to retreat to my brushes, inks and paper and create something that I can see and hold in my hand; something I might wish to share with others.

It does not surprise me that in this time of advancing technology our calligraphy guild is strong and growing. Or that more and more young people are expressing an interest in this artform that is slow and measured. Calligraphy offers a needed balance to our lives. Herman Zapf said that “Calligraphy is the most intimate, private, and spontaneous expressive means. Like a fingerprint or voice, it is unique with every person.”

Take a minute to reflect and practice our beautiful artform. Perhaps you, too, will create something beautiful that will change the world.

Happy Autumn,
Suzan OConnor

Major Workshop - Traditional Raised and Burnished Gesso Gilding with Ken Harris

Have you ever marveled at the beautiful illuminated manuscripts of the Middle Ages? Have you ever asked yourself how it is that these amazing illustrations, painted in vivid colors and gilded with real gold, have survived for hundreds of years and not lost a bit of their beauty? This is the class that will teach you the secrets of the medievalists and their art.
Initial D by Ken Harris
Classic gilding such as raised and burnished gold, involves techniques that have come down to us from the Middle Ages. You will grind ingredients to create the gesso (or ground) that supports the gold, lay the liquid gesso on your design, apply the gold and then polish it to a mirror brightness. Once your design is finished it will be ready for the next process - the application of color.
